"The hottest competition in mobile devices is between platforms, not within Apple’s. This doesn’t work out well for Adobe, because they don’t have their own mobile device platform — their plan is to create a cross-device meta-platform built atop device platforms created by others. And, worse (for Adobe), Adobe (or at least many people at Adobe, like Nack) knows that the best mobile platform, the one whose aesthetic and audience most closely align with their own, is the iPhone OS."

I mean since this will go NOWHERE..
whatever happened with CONSUMER CHOICE, apple is basically censoring my way to browse internet, and they will keep doing that for as long as flash is out there, and their devices don't allow me to see internet properly, as simple as that.

You think flash is not up to standards? then put a little sticker on the devices that says "we think flash is not up to standards to be viewed on this device, install at your own risk" that's it!

Let me remove the sticker and decide if I want to install flash on it or not, whatever happened to consumer choice? When china sensors certain websites everyone goes crazy, but when apple does it: is ok...

"it's for your own good, just ignore the white space and pretend nothing is there... we assure you nothing good can come out from that little flash movie anyways.."

Interesting read re: Adobe's "open screen" project and what it did/ didn't do.

    http://www.linux.com/archive/fea…

Think for a second about what having a "web standard" really means. Everyone agrees on a common format, and it's left open to each browser developer to implement it as best they can. When a company delivers a shitty implementation (IE for instance), we can simply switch to an alternative. There is no company out there with special knowledge of how the EM tag is supposed to work or retaining the right to charge you fees for using it.

Whereas with Flash - yea, you can now output SWF with third party tools like FD which is great. Theoretically the player itself can now be implemented by third party companies - but in reality Adobe is so far ahead (and left out some critical info) that there is not going to be a "Flash player competitor," probably ever. And you can hear it from the people trying to develop competing products in that article above.

That means one corporation, controlling that particular aspect of the web, forever. Put the specifics of the Adobe/ iPad debate to rest for a sec, what's "open" about that? There are plenty of good things about Flash, but openness isn't one of them.

ukit, the second we can start distributing our own browsers and find people who would actually use them, I will agree 100%.

I know you are smart enough to realize that the lowest common denominater rules good development, and while I agree there are major issues with the player, I DON'T belive that an influx of alternatives would improve things one bit! The illusion of choice when it comes to browsers is a hard pedistal to stand on when you consider real projects, and dev cycles, sure, the user has choices, but as a dev worth their salt, you don't.

Adobe have been stuffing us Flash developers around for years, all of a sudden they've got some competition and they're freaking out. They should have been preparing for the future when things were good. We all knew this day was coming. They've had ten years and now all of a sudden they're scrambling to fix their shit up.
    I'm all iPhone SDK now

    • Agreed. It is a very weak stance for Adobe to be playing a sympathy card.cramdesign
  • cramdesign0

Why should Apple be obligated to allow flash on the iPad? You can't play ps3 on the 360. Why is it so baffling that they might see some financial disadvantage and move to block it? They are both in the game to sell stuff. That's it.

Android will kill iphone anyway - give it time... already a backlash against it.

    • Kill? No. Even out the playing field and _maybe_ eventually cause Apple to re-think its strategy? Perhaps.Continuity

    @ckentish

The one thing people (read: activists on either side of the Apple v Adobe thing) have to remember is that, primarily, Google's brand revolves around its search engine in the average consumer's mind. I'm sure, in time, this will eventually change with the right marketing coming out of Google but, for now, the first association most people have with Google is internet searches, not mobile phone OSes.

Really, the Apple v Adobe v Android debate is pretty much limited to fanboys in any of the camps, and people who have a vested interest in one particular side winning (shareholders).

The point I'm trying to make is that no one device or platform will kill or supplant another, whether it's the iPhone/iPad, any of the Blackberries, any sort of Android device, or whatever else some bright spark comes up with between now and whatever. God knows Apple and RiM have been trying to kill the other off in the mobile market for a few years, now, and that war was basically a non-starter.

I think what it comes down to is that this whole very public antagonism between Apple and Adobe has been nothing more than bread and circuses for the fanboys, with the net result being increased brand loyalty and sales for both. Nothing more.

Neither the mobile market - nor the creative industry - are going to implode as a result of any of this because, at the end of the day, The Man in the Street simply doesn't give a rat's arse about it; and he represents the majority of consumers.

    • Also, I suspect that both Jobs and Adobe's CEO have small penises, which may or may not be entirely besides the point.Continuity

    who's fighting who?
I go away for two days and a war start,

Adobe made a very weak argument establishing these ideas within the ad campaign. It seemed like a "last stand" or a "cry for help". The only great point I saw on the "list of things Adobe loves" was the established community of Flash developers. These are people who work for companies who have based their entire business on one particular technology, despite any negative impacts it may have in the future. A bit ignorant and stubborn however many are already comfortable and set in their ways.

Flash was always a virtual simulator of what the web couldn't do, and now the web will soon do what Flash can do but better. Why keep using Flash despite its negative impacts? Problem is that people always knew the iPhone never supported Flash and there was always hope that it would for over the past 3 years. Now the iPad comes out...

Problem is that the portable smartphone, in order to continue improvements has to solve many issues and Flash doesn't solve any of them. Battery life is already an issue. Often finding myself with 1% of battery life, having barely used video, but alot of web use, but if my web was flash based.... I would have been cut off hours ago.

So in the end, Flash doesn't do anything good for the future of mobile. In the Adobe ad, not one mention of the word "mobile". Devices yes, mobile no. Flash will keep on the desktop, and when these battery issues, hard drive space and memory issues are solved, they might port over a version of Flash.

Let the other mobile companies include Flash on their phones, but putting millions of dollars on the line for a product, that is downgraded by Flash as it's users will burnout twice as fast. Who will they blame? Not Flash, cuz the consumer will not know. They'll blame the device itself, "This phone sucks because I only get 2 hours on it!". They're not going to say, "ahh! I only got 2 hours, but it was worth it for all the freedom of Flash I got". The user could not know the difference between a h.264 video and a flash video that hogged up twice the energy, and then again blame their mobiles.

    • "and now the web will soon do what Flash can do but better"
      care to explain how?
      georgesIII
    • basically more features added to what Flash can already accomplish.
      ********
    • It'll also do it better than Flash because Flash does not work on iPhone besides new 3D transitions + video effects
