Actually I take back some of my earlier harsh judgement. It may not be real but give them some credit, there are some interesting UI concepts in there.

Apple has some awesome products but you guys are biased to the point of fanboydom.

Does Microsoft have a branding problem? Everytime Microsoft releases something, people automatically hate it.
They should spin off a different company to release these kinds of products. Put as much different between themselves and the product as possible.

^ Agree with you Dr Bombay...I am amazed by the comments over here. It's like moving to a different planet, just take a look at the comments on Engadget. Over 700 comments with positive feedback on the Microsoft idea. Man, i own a Vaio Laptop, an 60gb iPod, and i use a Bamboo tablet every day, and looking at the Ms courier, i can positively see that it's a brilliant idea. Maybe the only problem is the lack of the Apple logo on it...

Any competition to Apple is good. I love a lot of Apple products but the constant proprietary software and file formats is bullshit. I have hundreds of movies in Xvid format, but I can't watch a single one of them on the ipad. It only does quicktime and Mp4. That microsoft thing will read any format you throw at it and if it doesn't some dude will hack it until it does.

I like some of the interface ideas in the videos. I wonder what outside firm they hired to create this.

MS perceptions on this board is hysterical. But it's even prevalent at any agency I go to, where "creatives" actually believe Adobe's creative suite was "designed" to be used on a Mac. And the IT department's don't help. Most workstations still fucking run windows XP, and Mac zealots still compare modern Apple software to it.
Windows 7, Zune (the device, service, everything), and Xbox (device, service) are all absolutely fucking stellar. Windows Mobile 7 looks promising as hell. People laugh off the Zune because it hasn't beaten the iPod in 'the market', while never even bothering to try one and see how damned sexy it is. I too could be a complete moron and laugh off Macs simply because of their low market share alone.
- windows 7 is a knock off from Macos. I'm not a Mac fanboy by the wayKiggen
- And so what? The small brand makes the jump and the massive company follows thru.DrBombay
- It progresses computing that way. Apple can take chances, especially with legions of fanboy soldiers to trumpet it.DrBombay
- How exactly is it a knock-off?kult

My problem is that I have already paid so much money in apps for the iphone, that are said to transfer to the ipad, so if I was in the market for a handheld device bet it apple or any other company, apple already has the upper hand.
- yeah, but being the same exact device, makes it useless to own 2 in different sizes thoughMeeklo

Why is the title of this thread so anti-apple bitter? Isn't competition good for us, consumers?

this gadget seems very girlie

I prefer iPads single screen. I can see multi-touch being very difficult with two screens, how to do you hold it?
- nikdaum0
Let's just wait until both are released before we declare a winner.
- raf0
In the second video, the animated as the whole thing finger drags items smoothly between the screens.
In the first video though, the dragged items are sort of parked in limbo between screens, so you can continue dragging on each side.
I wonder how this is going to work.

@rosem How do you hold a book, a notepad or hell - a sketchbook.
@kult - Totally agreeThere are some good ideas and concepts here both UI and lifestyle. Its getting really tired discounting companies based on their name. Chances are that the guys who developed this have nothing to do with MS but were allowed to use the vast array of resources available to them by teaming with MS. Yes the UI is ugly and that typeface is horrid but imagine that the app dev's from apple lend a hand making this skinnable device.
The whole its MS is a tired argument and so is the apple fan boy-ism.

turn your laptop 90 degrees and tell me how well this idea would work.

I don't have the link to hand, but I saw some Microsoft widget demo recently with a really neat, typographically-led, interface. Some of it is evident in these videos here.
Whilst my default state is to hate Microsoft, I'm getting good vibes about their future over the past few months. We need someone, other than Google, to stand against Apple in terms of the consumer tech experience - if only to keep The Game hot. Apple aren't themselves the nicest of companies - I can't help but feel that they're filling the void M$ is desperately trying to vacate.
- rosem0
... and to be even more negative... what about us lefties? touch screen and pen = all sorts of mayhem.
- I'd like to to think the'd have an option. Still, your typogtaphy will be a bit awry. haha, sucks to be deformed.detritus
- yeah, when I write on a chalkboard or dry erase my penmanship goes to shit.rosem
- and I think the only option would be to disable the screen for touch, and only recognize the stylus?rosem
- Josev0
why would being left handed be a problem. That could be fixed with a preference setting, no?
