i am also interested in a new camera.I find dSLR's are great, but im not encouraged to use them because they are the size of a house.
So perhaps a compact dSLR?
i just want a great camera that can produce professional images that i can carry round easily.Questions! -
What would you suggest (aiming for a price range around £320)? -(people seem to like the lumix lx3 which is £329.99)Are the default lenses on compact dSLR's pretty sufficient for most photography ventures?
i dont really want to get into crazy expensive lens territory,What limitations do compact dSLR's have over standard dSLR's (eg lumix LX3 vs canon 350D)?
Thanks, any advice welcome.

canon g11

limitations are smaller sensors, typically more noise at high iso, slower/undependable autofocus

small point of nomenclature - those are just compact cameras you're talking about, not compact dslrs. a dslr would have interchangeable lenses and a viewfinder of some sort.

the upcoming nx10 from samsung, with a full size dslr sensor, looks promising

Check out the Panasonic GF1 and Olympus EP2.
- Really happy with the GF1. It's an affordable digi rangefinder.sky2x
- too expensive

Wait till February, Panasonic is announcing a new Micro 4/3.

G11 has a range finder and you can mount canon lenses onto it. It can shoot raw and has a lot of manual dials to control your settings... I'm really loving mine.
- how do you mount lenses on a non-DSLR camera? You mean add-on's via extension tube, right?DoktorDavid

i know this is blasphemy here since it is not a Leica, Nikon, or cannon, but...
from dpreview;
"You have to take your hat off to Olympus for getting so much right with its first Micro Four Thirds camera. From the stylish, retro design to the top notch image quality this is a camera that, unlike so many we see, pretty much completely lives up to the hype surrounding it. And that's a lot of hype; few cameras released in the last few years have created the kind of frenzy of interest that greeted the unveiling of the E-P1 last month; hardly surprising given the paucity of genuine innovation in the digital camera market at the moment, particularly in the compact sector.For years now we - along with many of our users - have been pleading with SLR manufacturers to produce a camera like this, and we would be very surprised indeed if the E-P1 were the only model in this new category in 12 months time (in fact we'd be very surprised if Panasonic doesn't offer something similar this year). The combination of a compact body, large sensor and interchangeable lenses is an appealing one for the serious photographer, and for these users the E-P1, with its extensive photographic controls and superb output (not to mention the design, which harks back to the glory days of 'real cameras') is going to be very tempting, and - for the most part - very rewarding."

hey zarkonite, can you really mount canon lenses onto the G11?? Do you have to get some sort of apendage for that, or does the main lense come straight off? I had no idea....

- but you can get adapters

the G11 is fixed lens, not interchangeable.

"SLR" = single lens reflex
what you see through viewfinder is a reflected image of light coming through lens and captured to film/processor.
none of these are "DSLR"s in my books.
- yeh i know that, but people throw that term around - thought it might it!Hombre_Lobo
- might help it*Hombre_Lobo

^ what he said
The Leica is a rangefinder, not a DSLR.
The Olympus is an LCD screen of what the sensor sees, also not a DSLR.
