My original G9 first got a scratch on the lens from a hunk of dirt getting caught up in the scissoring closure (that was a pain, but not hard to fix via Healing) and then, while merrily shooting some time lapse photography it fell off my balcony - and went sixteen stories down = many, many pieces. I thank my lucky stars it did not kill anyone. I did buy a used one last summer in NYC - primarily for the built in time lapse, one of that camera's best features. I shoot one of those a week if not more (and with far more secure bungee cording).
Cannot really comment on the micro/4/3 movement; never owned one so no real world experience. Of course, assuming I had endless cash, I'd buy a Leica M9, as a lens interchangeable compact, but man, that is a lot of money.
Good luck!

Cheers Doc! thanks again for the help.
If they are the reasons "(to protect video production with 5D Mk.II and the eventual 7D)" i would agree, that does stink massively. How did your G9 get munched?? hungry hungry hippos?!! :D
Part of me thinks the extra £200 for a GF1 or EP-1 might be a more worthy future proof investment, what do you think? they are better cams thats for sure.

Hombre/dude... Good for you to do the research - full disclosure, I use Canon equipment when I'm on the "money making" side of the house.
I, of course, was talking about my own, personal experience. Both of the "Conclusion" sections on the web site you cited actually gave a higher review to the LX3. As for the video, well, comparing 1.78:1 to 1.33:1 is all apples to oranges. And comparing indoor versus outdoor, with the camera moving versus objects moving in the scene - you can understand my skepticism.
When my original G9 got munched the reason I didn't jump to first the G10 (and then the G11) was that Canon made a mistake with the G10 (still image performance was an order of magnitude worse than my G9) and they started to take features away (to protect video production with 5D Mk.II and the eventual 7D). All without reducing the price. That stank as far as I am concerned.
Regardless, was trying to give you some actual real world experience. Good luck with your decision.

Well david!!
Ive researched both in depth and ive found that the video quality of the LX3 to be very disappointing. Vital stats! -LX3 -1280x720, 24fps
G11 - 640x480 at 30 fps, H.264 codec, 10Mbps bitrateSure the LX3 is HD video, but its jerky and not very pleasant to watch. The video on the G11 looks very smooth and very high quality, even when upscaled. dont be let the pixels put you off of the G11 video, it has a great H.264 codec and the main reason i think it looks better than the HD Lx3 footage is because its super high quality 10Mbps bitrate!
Sample videos found here -
LX3 - http://www.photographyblog.com/r…
G11 - http://www.photographyblog.com/r…Judge for yourself, but to me the G11 looks so much smoother/
So what the LX3 remains to have over the G11 is the wide angle lens. I dont think its all that great, put next to the G11 you take 2 steps back with the G11 and you have the amount of view as the wide angle.
The zoom on the LX3 is almost pointless, 2.5 optical. where as the G11 has 5xoptical zoom.
Then onto image quality, the G11 surpasses the LX3 very easily - http://www.ephotozine.com/articl…
the G11 suffers less noise by a large amount. So the only thing the LX3 has on the G11 to me, is the size. Also i found the joystick on the LX3 horrible to use.
Thanks for letting me know though dude, appreciate the info!

Assuming you haven't dropped your load yet and that you are committed to a P&S as opposed to a DSLR - the LX3, with comparable image specs as the G11 (including CS4 read-able RAW format) and HD video capability (G11 is only 640x480) wins hands down. The fact you have to use a lens cap is a drag, but replacing that versus replacing a scratched lens when shit gets stuck in the telescoping scissors of the G11, a minor inconvenience.

hahaha amazing!

it's not meant to be fear and doubt, just my observation. i don't want you to sell them short.
i am personally against flashes especially built in flashes, always with that obvious awkward shadow and flat expressions on everyone's faces, but that's what you get in low light situations with a pocket cam. get yourself a low aperture lens and start to appreciate how your photography starts to resemble what you see and remember
- Hombre_Lobo0
version3, that is extremely helpful, particularly with the real life application you've mention when your not intentionally going out to photograph some stuff...
Why did you have to put fear and doubt in my mind!?! im indecisive enough as it is!! Thanks though mate, i might have to check out the size of the 350d and 400d at my camera shop and report back!
Heres an album of some photos Ive taken if your interested, on my compact and a friends compact, extreme amateur, but its fun.

- good stuffs, much processing?version3
- only a tiny bit of processing, contrast saturation. dont like to do too much, ruins it.Hombre_Lobo
- Smush is was a Nikon coolpix s1, and another but i forget.Hombre_Lobo

i see it as this; accessibility.
i have a 5d with a battery grip, flash, two hand straps, clip on polypropylene strap, an angle finder, and a backpack full of lenses. not the camera for an evening with the girlfriend where you may get dinner and walk around, i get it.
but i also have a 400d and 2 cheap plastic lenses that fit in her purse or over my shoulder under my jacket and while yes still significant and not a pocket camera, it is very durable and easy to use with presets in case strangers are taking your picture with it.
it will work better i believe to achieve the results you expect with room to grow later.
i speak from experience having first purchased and started in 1998 with an olympus 640x480 point and shoot then a sony dsc or whatever pocket cam then another more advanced olympus pocket cam with more features/options and lens attachments. then i got my 350d and received more compliments than ever, sold that then got a 30d for control and started earning some money, then i sold that now i have a 5d i rarely use unless its for money and i'm not even a photographer, so in anticipation of an upcoming trip, i have purchased the 400d and appreciate its size:capability ratio and am sure i will get more use out of it than the 5d as i will need to know i want to go "photograph" some things to get that out
- Hombre_Lobo0
thanks version3 but yeh i think the size is important
Sequoia i do thin your right, the G11 isnt that much better than the G10 but i see this -
http://luminous-landscape.com/fo…
and think, another iso range with low level noise would be v nice...- By Canon's own admission, they fucked up with the G10 - G11 is the "we fucked up" replacement...DoktorDavid
- flashbender0
the girlfriend just bought a lumix fz38, it is pretty nice - £300
no lenses though - just a 18x zoom lens.
Compact and super light
- niiice, but for my purposes it isnt quite high enough performanceHombre_Lobo
- yeah, not really a SLR, ignore this. It is a nice little camera thoughflashbender
- version30
it shoots RAW!, listen to the sequoia. it is wise and knowledgeable
- sequoia0
then take the money you save and get a nice camera bag or nice compact tripod

I'd say get the G10.
Cameras are just like cars. This years model will cost you more even if it's no better than last years.
- Hombre_Lobo0
lol.
The s90 is an AMAZING little cam, absolutely incredible photos for something so compact, in low light too, great sensor. Same sensor as the G11.
The zoom on the LX3 was just terrible. 2.5 is almost pointless.
G11 is amazing, better lens than the s90 and lots of manual controls.
Without going into the high expenses of the Lumix GF1, Olympus EP-1 and that type of high end SLR component / Micro four third range of cameras, the G11 is the best thing in my eyes.
But is the G11 worth the extra cash of the G10???
- Do not buy the fucking G10 - Canon fucked this up - if you interested in video the LX3 is a better buyDoktorDavid
