3D is a huge area to get into .. it's really interesting - but if you basically just want to create sculptures in 3d something like z-brush could be ideal.

THE MODO SOFTWARE IS BLOWING MY MIND AWAY!!

thanks for the advice in purchasing it.

  • o_O0

i made this last night, it is a bumper slider cover.

i keep doing the key commands in illustrator and messing up my image in modo. emulating 3D in illustrator is amazingly easier than 3D. but i like that i can rotate an object. rigging seems fun too.

wow so its been 3 days since i started to learn 3D and from my last post above i feel i have come a very long way. it has been the best 3 days in a long time for me creatively. i want to thank those that posted and advised towards getting Modo. it is light years ahead of Adobe Illustrator.

here is a single man'd Hover-Pod with above mounted Gattaling Gun and side Lazer Pluse Cannons with Ionic Pluse Firing Action!!!!

Hey, funny face person... you are epill. I never knew!

Hey epill, do you know Emmanuel Cobbet? He was accessories designer at DKNY probably just before you started there... men's bags I think. French bloke, looks like Bing Crosby, moved to London to work for Caterpillar apparel as accessories designer.

Looking at your resumé, I reckon there's probably 5 or 6 people we both know.

    • i may know him. but dkny was my apparel work for mens sportswear and outerwear.o_O
    • i didnt start accessories til 2001. which was after the fun days of DKNY.o_O
    • Okay, he would have left about 99 as he was already at Overland when I started there that year.Horp
    • He pretty much said the same thing though "Fun times are OVA at DKNY"Horp
    • I had no regrest about leaving that industry behind, but now I kind of miss it. Lots of travel, shows, research, engineering hardware etc.Horp
    • hardware diagrams. Hey epill, we should set up a company, pitch for contracts in the fashion industry!Horp
    • haha.. that sounds nice though, we do have a lot of experience...o_O
  • Point50

I had no idea that o_O was epill either until he started rambling on about mecha n shit!

  • o_O0

i was outed as e-pill by a few here who saw thru my posts... i still dont know how but... yes... hiya!!

Okay How about Rob Dunk at Tommy (Amsterdam office) or Ali Keys, menswear designer, Dockers (probably just Europe), or... argh, I forget the name of the person I know at Rocawear... He's from the north east of England, mouth like a cage fighter on crack, likes a drink, gets a bit punchy with it. Fuck, it'll come back to me.

    • Ah, okay. Rob is now VP of TH Europe so I wondered if he strode the globe talking to licensees.Horp
    • Anyway hi epill.Horp

On a side note... I used to use Adobe Dimensions for basic 3d engineering blueprints when I worked in the same field as you epill/ Did you ever use that?

I wish Adobe would re-introduce Dimensions. It could be great now as part of Creative Suite.

    • i used strictly illustrator til 3 days ago and now im using modo a 3D app. finally!!o_O

"i used strictly illustrator til 3 days ago and now im using modo a 3D app. finally!!"

I'm still undecided about whether to go into proper 3D. Its a lot to learn, I'm behind the game, and I'm not sure it will be cost effective for my sort of work.

Book covers are book covers and they don't pay a great deal. If I offer 3D work, I know I would get a load of commissions for book covers, but they will still only pay peanuts and frankly I don't want to get into the situation where they really want me to give over a large portion of my time creating 3D artwork for the same fee as I get for doing it in Photoshop.

Advertising would be a better market and I do advertising work too, but lately that's become a saturated marketplace full of 3D monkeys and the prices have dropped as a result. The results from a 3D app are far superior, but often my clients just want something done quicker that they can see earlier and that will be printed on newsprint for one day only, therefore photoshop remains quicker, cheaper, and in many ways more flexible.

I'd really love to get into 3D but I'm sure what the purpose would be for me other than a stylistic offer. That's what worries me though... styles go quicker than they come so its a lot of time and money to invest in a rapidly changing area of 'style'.

    • im having so much fun and these files are tiny and its light speed above illy..o_O
  • o_O0

i think 3D is for specific markets..

this is my hobby, this is wht i do for my free time my fun time.
i recommend it. it might give you a jumpstart toward new creativity.

im lovin it.. but then again this is whati want to do more than anything, and all i do is breath robots and engines and pipes and tubes and cylinders and wires and moving parts i see it all and i want to draw it...

i love 2D and i love 3D but i love to draw by hand best of all.

    • Oh yeah, I get that its a great fit for your stuff epill. I just find myself unsure of whether to make the leap or not.Horp

Glad to hear it worked out! Looking forward to your next few posts.

I once did a really complex piece of work for a client. It was all hand drawn, vector and then treated in photoshop. It became a sort of benchmark piece for me at the time, around 05. I was with Debut Art and they got a lot of enquiries for me to do work after that piece went on their site (they also got me the commission for the piece in the first place), but the thing was, the original commission was for a decent amount of money so it paid for itself, but all the subsequent commissions I was offered all wanted that piece of work but for a few hundred quid. Nobody would come with a budget that reflected the amount of work involved.

In the end, I agreed to do a few pieces for people within their budgets and immediately regretted it as I was working my nuts off round the clock to meet deadlines doing this really complex piece, knowing it was for a poxy fee. I stopped offering that style.

I have a strong feeling that for a jobbing illustrator like me, I would experience that sort of thing a lot if I suddenly offered true 3D. I wonder if anyone here has any experience of being a jobbing illustrator with 3D work???

(I'm figuring its okay to hijack the thread as epill's original request has been fulfilled)

    = D

    • i Horp you know, it was ME who first hijacked the thread..o_O
    • Oh hahahaha, so it was. I assumed it was your thread.

    • i wonder if epigraph ever did learn 3D yet... 3D means 3 days.. for me at least...o_O
    • nah, I wanted a 3d looking neon marquee and I just ended up drawing it in photoshop =)epigraph
    • then i thank you for allowing me to hijack the thread in the name of learning and robots.e-pill

anyone ever use Google SketchUp the free 3D app?? ive been seeing a few very simple and nice illustrations from it but i dont see any comments regarding its functionality..

i have 12 days left on my Modo license... i am loving it so much. thanks for the advice to purchase it. i really learned a lot in the last 2 weeks..

    • I use it a lot, but it's not my fave. It's not so good with organic forms and it's very drawing-orientedismith
    • But for free it's fucking amazing, and yes I do love the basic render styleismith
    • cool thanks!e-pill
    • Sketchup is a wonderful way to be introduced into the 3D realm at no cost. Solid package that I hope will improve.luckyorphan

    http://gallery.rhino3d.com/Defau…

I just installed Rhino and was looking on their site for some guides before I started, I was looking to see what I thought of it for simple stuff like furniture and apparel prototypes... anyway they had a whole section for MECHAS, I thought you'd dig it e. The mac version isn't for sale yet but you can apply for the beta or whatever and get it free (which I did).

I know you're having fun in Modo but if your trial ends and you want to look for something cheaper then maybe check it out :D

can someone explain to me what "animate turntable" does

i mean i saw what it does, but it advised to save as a gif, it went thru a whole process of turning the object and for 60frames at 15 per second and then nothing happened.. no file was saved from it..

am i missing something? can someone who knows Modo or 3D explain this?

    thanks much will be appreciated.

    -e

  • kewHexton0

e - a turntable camera/ turntable animation is basically a preset camera to turn around a model 360 so you can see all sides. You could replicate the same thing by creating a camera and animating in a circle around while pointed at your character/mech

Are you seeing the camera animate (do you see the camera travel around your model for any number of frames)?

I'm going to guess this probably a problem more with you export than the camera ->maybe you had a default camera instead of the turntable camera selected in your render settings?

    • hey kew, yes i saw a camera revolve around the object it went 60 frames.e-pill
    • it advised to save as a Targa [file type i am not aware of] and many others, i made a gife-pill
    • are you seeing the targa files? you should be able to import them in AE and then export a gifkewHexton
    • AE? after effects? i have that but never ever opened it.. its sitting in my apps since 2001.e-pill
    • haha yeah After Effects will open up the tga files > fire 'er upkewHexton
    • gosh another app i have to learn..e-pill
