FormZ
Good workhorse. About 100 bucks.

Modo seems to be an up-and-comer, though I've yet to try it myself.

cinema 4d if you are starting out
- CyBrain0
Maya, Lightwave, Cinema 4D, Blender
I love Cinema 4D and Lynda has some great tutorials that were good enough for me to get off the ground. Maya and Lightwave are so intense that you should be a 3D specialist if you're going to learn either of them.

what mac is needed to run Maya and what is the minimum RAM needed as well? also what is the price of Maya? i think i need to start doing 3D...
- kewHexton0
Blender is a free, open source download with a large community supporting it --
http://www.blender.org/
Much cheaper than Maya

can i use a 3d app for mac with my vector files from illustrator?
- not sure about blender > def can in mayakewHexton
- ill be using the software mainly for my hobby of making giant robots. so im not earning off it.o_O
- is maya the only real route for me though? or is there other opportunities with 3D and $ ?o_O
- It sounds like you'd be interested in more of the modeling side of things -- I've heard that modo (mentioned above) is a good modeling tool but I'm really just a maya guykewHexton
- here is my vector work.
http://www.krop.com/…
i want to make it 3D.o_O - i missed the modo link, it looks like a fit. or better than blender.o_O
- yeah def talking about modeling which most programs above will allow you to do > just with different toolskewHexton
- the base c4d pacage is under a grand. works well with AI files. download the trial and give it a go.Chief
- I know C4D will import Illustrator curves. I suspect most if not all 3D programs can also. Looks like most of your work would be done with 3D primitive tools though.CyBrain
- ... with 3D primitive tools: extruding cylinders, etc.CyBrain
- i actually draw out everything you see. i may use an extrusion app for references.o_O
- but everything you see, is drawn out with the pen tool.o_O
- o_O0
yes modo is exactly what im looking for.
http://www.luxology.com/store/19…nice mecha in there.
- < Incidentally, with mechanicals, it's not the tool as much as the user's preferences.luckyorphan
- Most modeling software can handle machined and synthetic ideas well, but organics and particles are another thing.luckyorphan
- what do you mean by "organics" and "particles" ??o_O

^cont from note above --
It sounds like you'd be interested in more of the modeling side of things -- I've heard that modo (mentioned above) has some really great intuitive modeling tools - though I don't have much experience with it. I'm a maya guy which has been getting better with modeling tools. Blender will certainly allow you to model (not just painting) too.
- modo looks like a fit, ill try that one and $25 bucks is easy enough. better than $3500o_O
- omg i dont know what i cliked on that said its $25.. its $1000.. oio_O
- You can try Modo for 30 days for $25. http://www.luxology.…luckyorphan
- thanks. i knew i saw $25.o_O
- o_O0
kewhexton thanks for the advice.
have a happy new year.- you too sir -> I would love to see those mech in sweet 3d!kewHexton
- i do draw all the sides of the mechs out.. front, back, 3/4, side and action poses.o_O
- its all vector though. so i have to draw it out every time. in 3D i can rotate an object? right?o_O
- yeah - once you model it you can 'shoot' it from any angle > having it drawn out from all sides will be very helpful in modeling itkewHexton
- you model creationkewHexton
- ...and then some.luckyorphan
- luckyorphan0
Buy that sub-D video too, if you're serious about it.
- o_O0
is 3D essentially the same thing as 2D, just you can rotate the images...you used a term "modeling" is that meaning "rendering" or is that meaning the concepting of the shapes?
- To oversimplify: Modeling is the creation of the 3d forms in space. Rendering is the taking a picture of those forms.luckyorphan
- eieio0
3d is not the same as 2d in many ways. Rendering is not modeling, modeling is sculting the forms and creating objects...the model is rendered with materials, textures, lights, animations etc. Rendering is processing everything in the scene into a 2d image.
- o_O0
i want to be able to rotate my robots like this and be able to have moving parts as the rendering of this looks like it could do.. in the end i want to make toys.
- ‹‹ what program is that?o_O
- it be mayaeieio
- if i am able to afford maya, can i run it on my macbookpro V10.4.11 2GHz intel 2GB ??o_O
- yeah itd run pretty smooth, just the more complicated it gets the rendering can get pretty processor intensiveeieio
- I suggest when you start with whatever program download a pre-made model to mess with and render yourselfeieio
- here are some NASA models to get you started http://www.nasa.gov/…kewHexton

download the trial for c4d. there are tons of tutorials online. it's possible to find yourself decently comfortable with the software in under a month if you put the time into it. and it's super stable on the mac.
- o_O0
thanks for the advice cheif, ill try it. i never used a 3D app b4. do all of them kinda run the same waay? i mean in terms of program usage or functionality. what separates them from each other?
thanks. happy new year!
- o_O0
i just purchased Modo, thanks for the advice.
