I once did a really complex piece of work for a client. It was all hand drawn, vector and then treated in photoshop. It became a sort of benchmark piece for me at the time, around 05. I was with Debut Art and they got a lot of enquiries for me to do work after that piece went on their site (they also got me the commission for the piece in the first place), but the thing was, the original commission was for a decent amount of money so it paid for itself, but all the subsequent commissions I was offered all wanted that piece of work but for a few hundred quid. Nobody would come with a budget that reflected the amount of work involved.

In the end, I agreed to do a few pieces for people within their budgets and immediately regretted it as I was working my nuts off round the clock to meet deadlines doing this really complex piece, knowing it was for a poxy fee. I stopped offering that style.

I have a strong feeling that for a jobbing illustrator like me, I would experience that sort of thing a lot if I suddenly offered true 3D. I wonder if anyone here has any experience of being a jobbing illustrator with 3D work???
