here is a Mix Up of 3D animations, turntable renders, still shots all created using Modo and editing with iMovie.
Audio track is created from a friend and lover of giant robots..

tell me what you think, this is my first editing job with audio and video as well as creating the modeling and animations.. so much stuff... im working out to learn rigging now.. been watching the tutorials over and over like endlessly.. i cant wait to start..

    :)

I think it's great for one of your first pieces. The only weird thing to me about it is why is there a reflection of the rings on the top of the glass square, because this is not the natural angle of reflection, and the top of the square would not show the reflection of the rings, when it is tilted back into Z-space like that. Just a thought, but solid improvement already e-pill, and I think what you will be doing in a year will be really great.

    • hey thanks. the reflection of rings you see on the faceplate, is another set..e-pill
    • off camera, i have another set of rings spinning that you can see from the reflection.e-pill
    • the tutorial i was using said the end result should cause that reaction you had.e-pill
    • hopefully i managed it..

      thanks for the support!!

Lightwave, btw modo modeler is a copy of lightwave modeling workflow.

Yeah too many reflections, could probably have used environment maps and it would have pretty much looked the same in that case.
    Very American TV News graphics

Could have been your lighting settings making it take ages to render, lots of people turn things on like GI thinking its a "make it look great" button when their work would have looked pretty much the same and by finished in a fraction of the time with a basic render.

the greatest 4 seconds of my life.. this animation took 16+ hours to render.. yet its only 4 seconds total... i guess its all the reflections..
the objects including my logo, are all made in adobe illustrator and opened in Modo easy peasy, and then i extruded the edges, applied material colours and adjusted the reflection and transparencies and thats it..

here it is.. the greatest 4 seconds of your life.. wooohooo

    :P

    • man, that's way better than some of my first year's output when learning 3d. cheersM_C_P
    • thanks.. but im kinda disappointed in the end result. i made a mistake..e-pill
    • the actuall animation i made is 600 frames and it had other things going..e-pill
    • i think its set default is 120 frames.. i just hit ok without realizing what it was..e-pill
    • im just happy that i can open illustrator files on modo no problem.. and that is all illy!!e-pill
    • the actual work took me a few minutes to make.. the render was 16+ hours.. meh!!e-pill
    • thats wack!! i mean its cool it looks all glass like i wanted it too and reflective..e-pill
    • but im not impressed with this.. id rathr you said it sucks,, because to me it suckse-pill
    • i think i can do better.. i did want it to look like a cable station company logo reel...e-pill
    • it does kinda resemble that but not really..if it was longer and the full animation maybe..e-pill
    • yeah, 16 hrs is a bit of a wait for some kinda pay off. reflections/refracti... always kill a cpu.M_C_P
    • as for the sucking part: its all part of the learning phase. mine sucked balls too. keep at it.M_C_P
    • im liking my learning... your visual of sucking balls.. not so much..e-pill
    • maybe i should stop with the tutorials and just make robots..e-pill
    • so if this didnt have reflection or refractions it would be fast render like the others??e-pill
    • ...faster w/o reflections for sure, nice work e!kewHexton
    • just decided to go for the full render and re-do this.. hopefully it can render it..e-pill
    • ETA of 21 hours.

    • update.. its been 20 hours and it just past its half way point of 131 frames..e-pill
    • it is 02/18/10 . ETA to complete render is still 27 hours away.e-pill
    • this better be the best 10 seconds ever!!e-pill

just opened Modo to find this starring at me..

    in 30 days i learned a lot.

    :)

  • e-pill0

i just started to render a 900 frame animation at 60FPS of a new bot i made last night for an exercise.. this time though the render time ETA states it will only take 1.5 hours while the first one at 600 frames at 60 fps had an ETA of 6+ hours.. so hopefully this will be done fast!!

i based it on the Gundam Zaku figure as i love the simple shapes and smooth lines of that mecha which has a great body and character to draw towards.

    here is my reference:

    here is my animation:

hey you guys.. im just kinda wondering what freelancers get in salaries for 3D work.. in fashion the rates accepted can be as high as you can imagine.. as i am changing careers at the moment as i am focusing everything i have in me on 3D as i want to master its function with in this year.. i have closely reached my goal of mastering the basics or even to intermediate learning of Modo. the ride has been very eye opening for me.. light years ahead of adobe illustrator.. as i used to draw out every view separately..

so do i have a shot at actually landing something fun and cool for 3D?? what is the opinion on that from your guys who work in 3D??

also what roles does an average designer play in the 3D market??
what are the major industries that use 3D that is good for freelance work in NYC?? is NYC the place for 3D or is it anywhere in the world as long as you have a connection..??

thanks for all the help!! i feel i would never be where i am today without your help, its been a trully amazing year for me already in the direction of creative drive and setting challenging goals.

i feel my drive and ambition to learn this and make it happen for me is stronger than anything i ever done and accomplished..

its a very nice warm feeling..!!

    :)

    • there are many architecture students who would be jealous of how quickly you got into 3d. (but there's no money in arch)ismith
    • everyone always told me to fuck all the 2d stuff I liked and get into 3d motion since that's where the $$$ is, but others here would know better than meismith
    • here would know a lot better than me.ismith
    • however idk if the salary itself is comparable to fashion... anyway I'm gonna go to sleep. good luck e!ismith
    • thanks!!

M_C_P thanks for the advice for making a nice frame rate.. i went with 600 frames and 60fps, it took 5+ hours to render... but the result is utter amazing for me!! it is my first ever!!

i added it to youtube and already it got 10 views!! w00t!!

HERE IT IS ED-208 DOIN THE ROBOT!!!

    :)

    • all i need is some mikey bay explosions and im golden! this also looks great fullscreen.e-pill
    • killer stuff mang!
      M_C_P
    • I like the way it looks, but it's centre of gravity is off .. wouldn't be able to pose like this.lukus_W
  • kewHexton0

^M_C_Ps got it... and I'd add, if you think about framerate in regards to television standards (and you're in the US) SD displays 29.97fps (often rounded when created digitally to 30fps) and HDp can pump up to 60fps.

    • what is "SD" n "HDp" i'm not familiar with that, also i don't watch any tv what so ever.e-pill
    • Standard Def, High DefkewHexton
  • M_C_P0

for framerates, you'd want at least 24fps and for a 10sec 360 turntable, you'd need to set your timeline duration to 240 frames.

but panning in 24fps can still lead to strobing if your pan happens to quickly. it happens in movie theatres all the time. increasing your framerate to 30 or even 60fps would help to smooth it out. just be sure to adjust your timeline duration accordingly (60fps x 10 sec = 600 frames)

    • nice work btw, epillM_C_P
    • thank you for this.
      very appreciated!!

i jsut threw in a random desert background for a scene.
as this is my first time making anything like this i wasnt sure on how to set the frame rate sequence as its moving too fast and the sequence itself is rather short.

i had it set on 24frames with 20fps.. can someone advise upon a better ratio for the sequence, something like at least 10-15 seconds. i think that can be a nicer visual to the art itself.

    thanks.

  • baseline_shift0

nice, e. What did you use for the background?

Can you slow down the cam?

    • Right on!! - did you export the mov from modo, or use one of the found apps?kewHexton
    • dude this is seriously awesome... now really wanting to start doing some 3d today :Dismith
    • i clicked on the render drop down and clicked "render turntable" then saved as .move-pill
    • no exporting at all. everything was handled thru Modo.e-pill
  • kewHexton0

I love seeing this stuff! thought I might share a bit of what I've been working on today > this is a maya render of a in progress project.

    • is that the view of maya's 3D workspace? the background gradation is what im talking to.e-pill
    • no, this is a render, the gradient an environment spherekewHexton
    • *gradient iskewHexton
    • ahh its a nice calming coloure-pill

i tried blender at first (as it was a freebie) but found it really difficult to use intuitively. Cinema 4d seems a lot more forgiving for a beginner and makes it way easier to inport vectors from illustrator, and export for photoshop.

    • i tried blender too and didnt like it.. felt it was too "scultpy" for my needs..e-pill
    • i gave it up after spending an hour trying to install a 3rd party plugin to import vectors from AI, and couldnt make it work.baseline_shift
  • baseline_shift0

I literally just got cinema 4d and started working with it last night. heres my first test image.

i was working with lighting, materials, and textures. i even figured out how to add fog.

This program is EXPANSIVE. i cant wait to really start digging in.

    • the new wave 3d stuff is really making me want it again, looking niceversion3
    • :DkewHexton
    • this is pretty dope, i didnt even think of its app for doing this, nice inspiration for me!!e-pill
  • Iggyboo0

What software in 3d works best for mac that allows someone lets say to make 3 dimensional type and give it texture than allowing you to rebring it back into photoshop, or after effects?

  • e-pill0

sorry this is the image i was advising towards from my post about..

  • e-pill0

i made this last night and this was the file that was getting the render. the camera view panned around the circumference of it at 60 frames.

it advised to save the file as a Targa amongst many others, i chose a CompuserveGif as i thought that would be the one for moving animation, but the file never saved and then i saved as psd and everything else including the "Targa" file which im not sure what that is for..

the whole "turntable render" stage i am really not prepared for yet as i am still learning the fundamentals of subD modeling.

i was just trying it as my Modo license expires in 5 days so i was just seeing the parts of the app that i didnt get to try yet..

thanks for the input and the help, you have been giving me a lot of great feedback and encouragement in my learning process and i thank you for it.

    :)

    • I'd say keep exploring your export/render options >usually my 3d workflow will involve exporting stills then putting together the sequence in AEkewHexton
    • make sure that you have multiple frames exporting
      kewHexton
    • from first note: put them back together in aekewHexton
    • ok, but i think i will be putting AE on hold til i learn a lot more of 3De-pill
    • not sure what my learning curve will be for AE. i honestly do not know what its for.e-pill
    • i guess it wouldn't NEED to be ae really any video program you can then assemble a frame sequence in..kewHexton
    • i use AE as im comfortable in it > i guess you could do the same with premiere or final cutkewHexton
    • omg i just checked my apps folder and i seem to have those as well..e-pill
    • i never did video anything b4, so i am not sure why i have em.e-pill
    • haha, score!kewHexton
    • "i chose a CompuserveGif" LOL!BIGGESTDOGINTHEWORLD
