It sounds like you'd be interested in more of the modeling side of things -- I've heard that modo (mentioned above) has some really great intuitive modeling tools - though I don't have much experience with it. I'm a maya guy which has been getting better with modeling tools. Blender will certainly allow you to model (not just painting) too.
- modo looks like a fit, ill try that one and $25 bucks is easy enough. better than $3500o_O
