I hope they had the common courtesy to give you a reach around too.

well out of order but should have rung alarm bells before now...
no harm in asking for compensation though...

Mate, that not a bloody interview, it's a job. What where you thinking.
If you did all this work without informing the company you expected some form of payment then don't expect any now?

In Canada, an employer must compensate you for any work you do, based on the employment standards act. Not sure if you have something similar, but I would talk to a lawyer.

If proof was ever needed that Graphic Designers students are shit a Business negotiations, this is it. I'm Laughing and crying at the same time.

Just show up to their office like you have the job.

I would ask for compensation as well. 25 hours is more than three 8 hour days. If they don't, pass the word on the Internet to humiliate the mofos.

Really, if you did actual work which they use, rather than a dummy test layout, you were robbed. Is what you did somewhere online? Can you document you did it?
Unless you signed something stupid, there is no way they can dodge a reasonable bill.- I would've waited until they use the work, now they'll just drop it and answer you got test material, not actual work to doraf

Nothing I did has been used (yet) and this whole process was over 2 months for a position that is new. So I understand them requesting all this work and I don't think it was foolish of me to put this much effort in a job that would have paid well over six figures.
Anyways, I have requested to be compensated so we'll see what happens.
Thanks for all the responses. The serious and helpful one's at least.
- Good luck. The worse thing that can happen is that they deny compensation, and they don't use your work.kgvs72

Actually they were completely out of line to ask you to do that work. I've never heard of such a ridiculous recruitment process.
You shouldn't expect them to reimburse you, but send them an invoice by all means, even if just to ensure they are aware of what timewasting assholes they are.

Reason #3,785 why I never want to have a boss ever.again.

I can't believe people are saying it was out of line for a company to ask an interviewer to do some work to see what they're capable of. Ive done it twice now and have even done it when hiring graphic designers. It's not that uncommon.
- i think that people are more outraged at the scale of the work he was asked to do.bigtrick

What is the name of the company? Do us all a favor and save us the trouble of working for them...
- hektor9110
Is that a newbie mistake? That almost happened to me 8 years ago.

Just say to them you just want to try out the money that they would have paid you if you got the job. Reassure them it's just a trial with the money though and that should put them at ease.

You can always put it in your CV that you worked for them.
- DrBombay0
did you sign away the rights to your work? Have you signed anything?
