Compensation question

So I've been on 2 interviews with a company and have done 3 separate projects for them that probably total about 25 hours of work as part of the interview process. I just got notice that I won't be getting the job so now I'm wondering if I'm entitled to any kind of compensation for the time I've spent on these projects.
Is it appropriate to ask to be paid for that time? Has anyone had a similar experience or has asked to be paid in a situation like this?

Sounds like you work for free.

I didn't think you have the savvy to make it in this line of work.

Post a JPG of the work that you did, we will collectively decide if you should be compensated for your efforts.

haha, it sure seems that way. I've been on interviews before though and had to show what kind of design I could come up with in order to get the job. In fact the same situation helped me get my current job so I assumed it was normal. : /
- That's what portfolios are for, to show strangers what kind of work you do. Never do work for free.noneck

I say go for it, but I don't think you'll end up getting compensated, but if you're ever in this situation again you'll know next time to discuss this upfront and say you're willing to do the work, but if you don't get the job, you want paid for your time..

and as a friendly note, don't feel too bad, most of us have being fucked over by variations of this theme.
my favourite 'being screwed' method is the ever classic, "do me a favour on this first job, there's heaps of work coming after it".

Maybe if you just do one more little thing, for about 4 or 5 more hours, they'll start to pay you? Maybe you should give them one more chance?

i too have been duped with this scenario not too long ago and I declined the position when they asked me to create a second email design comp. Just think, if these people are this much of a pain in the ass during the interview process, can you fuckin imagine how wishy-washy they'll be fulltime. Fuck that, fuck them, fuck no.

If they use the work, bill them. You thought they gave you training material, say in court.
- and if you're in court you'll win your $800 and the pay $4200 in fees. phyloric victory right there.airey
