orphan, regarding your 487+200=687 note, should they have left the implementation out? leave it online, save trees and all? I don't even want to argue about "no design is worth half a mil" because it's such bullshit.
- My 687 note was only a math correction. Someone had used the number 787...luckyorphan

Wait... what the fuck? Are some of you seriously downplaying the value of design here? On a design form? Ridiculous... if anything we should be applauding the fact that the city paid as much as they did.
I don't understand the argument over whether the city got value. The logo's worth what they are willing to pay for it.
I'm sure some of the same people who are saying the logo's not worth what was paid for it are the same people who think nothing of multi-million dollar contracts paid out to athletes. Makes me sick.
I say - pay MORE. And more often, PLEASE! That might potentially open up the wallets of the people running some studios, 'cause God knows we are badly needing more HIGHER paying jobs, not LOWER paying ones, for fucks sakes. Or how about some jobs. period. fuck.
I'm tired of hearing this kind of shit – from designers no less.

This doesn't surprise me one bit.

letters with pattern fills... city = robust
council gets the agency bills... city = bust

you people are funny. you bitch that our skills/experience are undervalued if someone is selling a 200 dollar logo, and then you bitch when someone charges half a million.
- both are extremes worth bitching about.********
- so what do you think they should have paid?marcostill
- both are extremes worth bitching about.

"so what do you think they should have paid?"
good question.
"Quebec and Manitoba will receive the most from equalization payments in the 2009-2010 year."
Seeing as Quebec is a "have not province" they shouldn't be spending a dime on logo's. But spending Western Canada's money is what Quebec does best.
- sorry befall99. not trying to piss you off, it's just my opinion.********

man, how do these guys find their way to the toilet at night?
do you think some random guy made a logo, and maybe a stationery for a city and got paid 500K? ffs many people were involved, many hours were involved, I'm sure many concepts were developed, and costs money to develop every single concept even if we'll never see the rest of them. applications, I don't even want to think of the sheer amount of them. meetings. research. think on a large scale damn you.
and then there's this, if I do logos for $2000 and then BMW shows up and wants me to redesign their mark, do I say "um yeah, $2K I guess" or do I fucking say "$50K or GTFO?" use your brain, it may hurt at first, but it's worth it
- It is possible that those who disagree are using their brains quite well, of course.luckyorphan

- I would love to know how much was paid for these, as they're are considered classics.********
- they were still on the munich trip, and rightly so. when did lympics' IDs started to suck? Atlanta at least had a cool logojimbojones
- See... what I don't get is what these have to do with anything olympic. People say "classic"Gucci
- but I see graphic play.Gucci
- Don't get me wrong, I think they have merit and they're interesting in their own right, but I'm just wondering aloud.Gucci

I would rank 'designing a logo' almost at the bottom of a list of a city's responsibilities. A private institution should be charged as much as they are willing to pay for their logo, because they have a brand to sell. The city, however, has other duties – branding being among their last. I simply don't see how any argument – be it for tourism, promotion, whatever – is strong enough to support saying to the taxpayers, "Thanks for your 687 billion. Sure we could improve our schools or infrastructure, but, hey – enjoy your new logo!"
I'm pretty progressive, politically, and I'll defend a designer's right to get paid for their work to the death, but this one just doesn't add up, to me. This is more of a civics issue in my mind, than a design one.
- 687K and design costs only 487Kjimbojones
- so you're saying a city's brand image has nothing to do with tourism, or attracting biz to your city?marcostill
- A brand can be created without a logo.luckyorphan
- sheesh... you think there wasn't a whole freakin strategy for $487k?? not just a logo?Amicus
- jimbojones0
Actually now it's not that much, I've seen smaller cities paying over 500K for an id. And I guess they see it (they should at least) as an investment, just like private companies invest in advertising. try to lure me to montreal if the poster is fucking ugly? and something that is not ugly will cost money.

luckyorphan just hit the nail on the head.

"A brand can be created without a logo.
– luckyorphan"as much as a brand is much more than just a logo, it still requires a logo. show me one successful brand that doesn't have a logo.

- walt disney has a logo but that's not its strength, its power comes from the many face(t)s of his characters/productsversion3

If someone would please show me a logo for Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Tokyo, Beijing, Mumbai, Hollywood or any other major international city that had anything to do with the city's becoming prominent, then I'll gladly accept that I am wrong.
In the end, a city becomes known because of what it is, not how it is sold. People go to New York for money, LA for fame, New Orleans for music and Paris for love. But none of these cities benefited greatly from a logo that costs a ton of dough.
Awareness is one thing, and a logo could do that, but it should be weighed against other priorities, and the budget should reflect this.
- you're talking about cities that were prominent for ages.jimbojones
- I think you've seen the Hollywood logo. It's that big white one, up in the hill.Amicus
- yeah, Paris only had to build THE FUCKING EIFFEL TOWER to keep up.zarkonite

"With its solid three-point footing, the monogram echoes the population’s roots and pragmatism. Its stylized and friendly curves reflect the straightforward and warm welcome offered by the region’s residents. Its modular interior can be easily adapted to display Greater Montréal’s many levels of diversity (geographic, economic, cultural, community, etc.). Its whole suggests the notion of the physical, creative and entrepreneurial space available in the region to realize one’s full potential."

luckyorphan just hit his own head maybe, what can a city do with 487K (the cost of design, the implementation would be on city's duties anyway in some way, renew this, repair that etc)? Can you improve the schools and infrastructure for 487K?
- Yes. Absolutely.luckyorphan
- Go to any principal or school district head with half a mil addition to their budget, and see what they say.luckyorphan
- we're taling about ONE school. but I believe Montreal has more than one. spread the cash over all of them, it's like uh $20 each?jimbojones
