My appartment was broken into the other night and cleaned out basically. My biggest problem is knowing the my laptop contains thousands of pics of my kids...from birth til now. I dont care about all the stuff that was taken except for these. What do you think happens to a macbook after its robbed? i am hoping itll be wiped for resale but...dunno. it was password protected, had 3 user accounts (the pics were on my account). any advice? ideas?

no mobileme?

if its password protected it might be ok. it might force the fucker to try and re-install the OS rather than try to hack your password (assuming they know all this stuff)
sorry to hear that btw

OS passwords aren't worth shit by the way. Unless you actually encrypt files they're there for the world to see. Just remove the disk and get it mounted on another machine.

i really don't think anyone's interested in the data, seriously. They'll do a basic wipe to sell it on that's all

It's a real pity if you didn't backup your pics but this is 2009 dude, you know you have to backup things you really want don't you!!
But relax, what the hell would a crack head want with photos of your kids playing in your garden!! Doubt they are expert hackers anyway. As long as your shots are innocent I really don't think anything will happen to them.

My condolences. My wife and I were robbed nine years ago - stripped right down to the walls - fuckers took their time and really did us. I still come home at night and check and see if the obvious is still there (nine years ago it was nice rectangular space where the TV was that hit me first when I walked in the door). Regardless, nine years later I'm glad we were not home and (a lot) worse didn't happen. Be happy you are alive and move on.

I have a backup of all my stuff on an external hard drive, and I keep it at work. I bring it back to home every 2 months or so to update the backup and bring it back to work afterward. My house can burn down during the day, i will have a backup with me at work.
i know my comment is not gonna help you at all. sorry for you :(

Sorry about that shit. Fucked up.
When I was home in Sweden my father had his camera stolen when he was out and about one day in Sthlm. Drove him apeshit as he hadn't downloaded the latest shots of his grandchildren/friends/family. Parcel arrived in the mail a week later. Inside was a CD with images that were on the camera. No names. No nothing.
Can't figure out how the thief knew where to send it...
Sort of spooky, oddly infuriating, and weirdly thoughtful.

Thats spurred me to think about starting to back things up more.
I have a lot of stuff backed up on an external that I take to work with me everyday but should back up all older stuff. Mind you i'd hope that a robber wouldnt be assed to take a massive box full of unlabelled and obvious work cd's (i.e not look like music cd's that they could get £ for). One of my workmates has a wireless external drive that he keeps in a locked cupboard so that if his house gets burgled it might be safe. You could take it one step further and get an actual safe to keep your wireless HD in?
Sorry to hear about your loss, must be a nightmare!
I reckon that the drives will just be wiped though and sold on.- i feel like if something was locked they would want to get in there even more.nicole_marie

That sucks dude, I feel for ya. Unless Gary Glitter broke into your flat you've got nothing to worry about. Hope you get it back.

Hopefully this happened at your home...
Hopefully you had renter's insurance...
