The student "was backed up against a corner, and either out of fear or out of panic, he just struck the sword with force," said city police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
I see that the student watched CSI...

ok, so I'm wrong (well, at least according to wikipedia)
The katana (刀?) is a type of Japanese sword (日本刀, nihontō?), and is often called a "samurai sword." In a precise sense, the term katana in Japanese is applied to any kind of single-edged Japanese sword, although, incorrectly or habitually, some Japanese and Western sword lovers define katana as the standard size moderately curved (as opposed to the older "tachi" style featuring more curvature) Japanese sword with a blade length of greater than 60 cm (23.6 inches).[1] In Portuguese the designation (spelled catana-perhaps delineated from the Japanese word when Portuguese traders first arrived in Japan) refers to a slightly shorter and wider blade, commonly used to clear paths through dense jungle, or to otherwise cut down wild vegetation.
The katana is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single edged blade, circular or squared guard, and long grip to accommodate two hands. It has historically been associated with the samurai of feudal Japan, and has become renowned for its sharpness and cutting ability, to the point that its purported cutting capabilities have reached mythical status.

what a stupid move, it could had ended the other way to.

The scenario of this kid going out to seek revenge on the person who stole his beloved game system and laptops is not all that far fetched. After all, if the perpetrator was in the garage, the kid could have easily called the police discreetly and possibly caught the guy.
Additionally, who would lunge at ANYONE carrying a big ol sword. Maybe to try and get it from him, but seriously, if i was the dead guy and the kid was backed into a corner WITH A SWORD i woulda found the exit and hightailed it outta there.*dusts off tin foil hat, places on head
- Maybe it was dark and the perp didn't see the sword?TheBlueOne
- It's the seeking out of the criminal (whom could have had a gun for all he knew) that seems out of placelocustsloth

he's a serial killer who invites burglars into his house and then kills them

Sad the thug had to die, but this guy had every right to use his sword. In a situation like this, I'd say the bandit brought it on himself. This is why you don't break into peoples home's multiple times and try to steal their stuff.
- I like to carve a "T" in the side of their face and send them on their merry way.Mimio

If you break into someone's home to steal their things like a piece of shit scum bag, then you deserve to get your hand chopped off, shot, whatever.

Unless it really was self defense, I think he went too far. People shouldn't take the law into their own hands like that. *nag**nag* Seriously, he could've just killed someone dumb or confused.
- Someone comes into my house in the middle of the night? They take tieir life into their own hands.TheBlueOne
- It is too bad he died, but he chopped off his hand..usually not life threatening I'd think.jfletcher
- bled out probably...TheBlueOne
