Totally, I went in because I had some numbness in my arm for about a week, so the did the full exam, my arm gradually got a bit better, but the x-rays show that my spin does have some curves that are out of whack, and my neck has bad arch to it as well. I am only 29, so they said it should be no problem to get back to "correct":

Been to three. They've never, ever helped the problem. Only temporarily relieved the symptoms.

I don't think it's a sham, it worked for me. You need to be open about "alternative medicine" if you want to give it a try.

You need to be careful, because picking the right chiropractor is not easy, I went to one when my back was killing me, I couldn't even move, first time I've ever been to one, and I didn't even know they were not actual doctors after I left his studio.

In my experience, it did hurt a bit when he popped some of the bones in my back, specially some I never cracked before, but instantly it feels AMAZING, you are completely relaxed and in one visit I felt 100 times better.

The only thing is that before he cracked my back, he made me sit down on a 1 on 1 class on why chiropractic is so important for the functioning on all the organs and was basically doing a sales pitch for me to sign up to have him crack my back 3 times a week for the rest of my life.

That was a bit scary and I decided never to go back to that guy again, but I'm down to give it another try if I feel like I need it and at a different place.

it almost killed a co=worker... and i am not kidding

If you can find a good one your gold. A lot of them are scammers that want to set you up on return visits forever.

Although I have to admit that I have always had better results from Alt medicine then going to conventional western medicine. I've had numerous muscle and connective tissues injuries completely fixed by a friend that practices ART (Active Release Technique). I approached my family doctor about all the injuries before going to see my friend and they just shrugged their shoulders and try to prescribe anti inflammatory meds and pain killers.

    • SO FUCKING TRUE.
that's our world. Give you meds which are a temporary fix and cause side effects. N1

I love mine, but it took me years to find one I didn't think was a sham.

I went to several who charged my insurance 70-80 bucks for 3 minutes of cracking. The guy I go to know used to do all this sports medicine stuff in Brazil and I love him. Especially since I started more stressful workouts. He used to work with MMA people, so he’s great.

One of the biggest issues I've seen is if they don't give you exercises to do. I've found if I do my exercises, stay in shape, sit right, I'm great. Mostly problems occur when I travel and have a week or two of working at hotel desks and airplanes.

...but my guy now helps my back, and my whole body. My hip flexors have always had a ton of issues with them, but he's been great helping me with that.

So overall, you have to find someone who works well. Otherwise it's short term relief.

    • not a good sign if they do not give you exercises! a real bad sign!grafiske

That exact same thing happened, which is what made me feel unsure about the whole thing. I had to sit and watch a video, and the speech he game for 20 minutes was so rehearsed and cheesy.
It was totally a sales pitch. Not that I am saying it couldnt help.

    • yeah, that's a bad sign. A good chiropractor should not do that. Find someone else.Miguex

Do some research on-line for some tips on how to choose, and see if you can find people you know that can recommend one

Pulled a lower back 6-7 weeks ago. Went to a chiropractor today, and also took some xrays. I'll see what she says tomorrow.

I have gone a totaly of 3 times. One of those times i couldn't even walk my back hurt so bad. I was carried in. Each time i have skipped out of there in complete joy. I go to a sports chiropractor that was recommended by my friend. I would recommend this anytime you are having neck or back problems. Mine have been because my neice and nephew think i am a trampoline and jump from high distances on my back.

Try it out. You could get a ton of benefit from it.

    • Just don't feel the need to sign up for a weekly program unless you need it.capn_ron

i used to go quite a bit for lower back problems. he'd crack my neck and lower back each time and i felt like a million bucks. turns out my lower back pain was a result of really high arches. i got some inserts for my shoes and stuff a sausage down my pants for shits n giggles but since then i've had no back problems whatsoever.

whenever i feel really tight in the neck or back i crack my neck on my own and it helps alleviate the pressure.

    • hmmm. sausage in the pants. i'm going to give that a try for my greasy hair problem.capn_ron

    - Written by skepdic.com who also doesn't have any credentials.

    - "Some chiro's have harmed ppl w/ risky procedures, some of which have even proven fatal." True, same thing happens much more often with medical practitioners.

    - They talk about some guy from the 1800's who was a claimed chiropractor, with all this wild shit. This is all probably true. At the same time, people learn shit over the last century and knowledge of things evolve. I'm pretty sure there were medical practitioners who put baby snake shit into anuses and thought it would bring people back to life, or maybe that was just in Indiana Jones.

    - "They say bogus claims without having clinical evidence". Their evidence is actual people who are fixed.

My bro's a chiropractor and I firmly believe he believes in what he does. He wouldn't be doing it to scam people. He spent 12 years of school to learn this stuff and is constantly learning new things. Just as much or more than a medical practitioner. Yes, it is considered alternative medicine right now.

Tomatoes were considered poisonous back in the day, now people use ketchup on everything. I don't know what that has to do with anything.

    • "I firmly believe he believes in what he does"... Mm, priests too.
      Just saying! :)

I got popped too, my back was killing too, couldn't walk but I made it to the chiropractor, it was amazing, we all crack our backs and stuff, but they will crack things you've never thought possible and it feels AMAZING.

My only turnoff was that my guy was super christian, and he gave me this 45min speech about his profession (because he felt guilty that I would think he was a scammer posing as a doctor) which I swear I didn't give a shit, I just wanted him to roundhouse kick me in my lowerback with his knee.

He started saying things like, Well Jesus wanted you to come here to let you know that you need to take care of your body...

I looked around and all christian photos, the cross on his neck was in tune with their christian rock radio blasting on the speakers, I never went back, he scared the shit out of me, but only because of the religious thing, I need to find another guy.

    • i have a doc for you. Dr. Melvin. He is in La Mesa and i can give you his info.capn_ron
    • nice, that's you guy huh?Miguex
    • it is. he is fantastic and doesn't talk about jesus at all. he just goes in and fixes me right up.capn_ron

funny, my 2 year old thread pops up today. Since then I changed jobs and insurance so I no longer have an alternative medicine clause. No more $10 co-pay chiropractic visits.
Last year I tweaked my back yet again and since I couldn't go to the chiropractor I had to go to a regular doctor who just gave me pain pills. I rather enjoyed those pills but just got me high and numbed my back for a few weeks.
I still have lower back pain and I'm seriously considering going back to the Dr and asking about Cymbalta. I thought it was used mostly for depression but I've been seeing commercials for its use on "lower back pain"

Chiropracters just remove symptoms temporarily, they do not cure anything. Identify the underlying cause of the problem and fix that.

Many years ago I had a recurring lower back problem which eventually went away when I got fitter and toned up my midesction thus providing the support my lower back was missing. Pilates did it for me.

    • Obviously, they're not working with diseases and viruses. They fix problems. But if you keep at affecting some portion of your body afterwards, it'll need to be fixed again. Just like a car.fyoucher1

Just got back from the chiropracter, and we looked over the xray. She said my bones are strong, my muscles are in good shape. She said there's a slight shift in my spine, that she can adjust in 6 sessions. Seems like I would need maintenance, so I asked if it would heal on it's own. She said it will be fine, just not perfect. I postponed future appointments to think it over.
