There.
I said it.
Im nearly 38 years old and I can't drive a car.
To be honest, I'm really fearful of learning - people are lunatics, I fear that if someone cut me off, or acted dangerously around me, I'd go crazy and drive into them in a rage.
I really need to learn though - what if my wife of child needed a ride to the hospital ? Or just out for a nice day out ? My wife has to do all the driving at the moment and it's not fair.
Can anyone motivate me enough to try to learn ? You may swear, assasinate my character and call me names. It's pathetic. I'm 38 for fucks sake, what a little bitch.

It's OK. I don't really like it all that much.
- It's so mindless to me I get bored easily. I prefer sleeping in the back while someone else is driving.juhls

I only learned to drive in the UK in 2006. Now I'm over here and only got my learner's permit two months ago.
- 2006 = age 315timuli
- But I passed with only 4 minor faults.
:D5timuli - Hmmm... 3 in Connecticut means FAIL.ismith
- But you drove in the US, right?juhls
- One major fault is a fail. Sixteen minors is a fail. The UK test is stricter than US tests.5timuli
- I drive with my permit, yeah. Too fast and I still can't parallel park.5timuli

Driving makes the ten minutes before liquor-stores close so much less stressful.

If you've every played GTA, it's basically the same thing.

It probably seems a lot more "dangerous" to you than it actually is - which I think you'd realize once you start driving yourself. Could something crazy happen? Of course it could. But so could it when your walking down the sidewalk, riding the subway or whatever.
I didn't get a license till I was in my 20's myself, and honestly, driving is really pretty easy to get a handle of.
- Thank you for your measured, intelligent response. Please drive near my wife and child.mikotondria3
- Just go to some isolated parking lot with your wife and drive around. You'll quickly see it's no big deal.NotByHand

The most fun I had driving was when I was 15 and my parents were away. I suggest you just drive, fuck the license!...it'll be much more exciting!
- Peter0
Bitch does this planet really need another driver?
- VectorMasked0
How's this... I already had a car when i was 15... and started learning at around 11...
now... you also have to think about this... do we really need an inexperienced driver out there? we got enough 60-year-old ladies blocking lanes and creating chaos on every street.

You've been missing out. Go get your licence.

Parallel parking really is the greatest thing of all time. Go learn.
- I actually didn't have this on my test, but somehow found myself needing to in the real world, it was fine. Actually fun to get it rightismith
- right.ismith
- I was just trying to be motivational...juhls
- ...I mean, yeah, it's super fun. GO MIKO, drive off into the sunset, parallel park on every whim!ismith

Really it's not hard. You just need to be calm, and be able to do slightly different motions with different limbs (no jamming of your legs if you have to yank the wheel...). Find a large empty parking lot (try a mall on a Sunday morning) and just follow the lines. About an hour or so of that and you'll be accustomed to the car and all its idiosyncrasies. Then you can get your permit and move your way up the levels of trafficked roads I guess, whatever it is you do when you're over 21 (no idea what the process is except as a teen or renewing).

I really miss driving. not the best idea in hong kong

i didn't get mine til i was approaching 30 myself...was living in the city, and frankly, subway and streetcars and cabs pretty much took care of any transportation needs....
then my wife and i started thinking about buying a house, starting a family etc....at that point, it was made pretty clear to me that hailing a cab if she was about to deliver a baby wasn't going to cut it....went out and got my license...
found it nerve wracking a bit to learn in the middle of a big city...but you get over that pretty fast....
now i can't even imagine not having my license and a car....
we live in the burbs now, and although i don't have far to drive to get to work, or to drop off the kids at school, it still beats waiting for a bus....so.
motivation for you?
simple.
it's relatively easy getting a drivers license.
it's not expensive either.
once you get the hang of driving, its pretty damn fun.
the feeling of independence is amazing. seriously. no more depending on others for transportation.....no more buses, no more waiting for the subway/streetcar etc....go anywhere at anytime.
the knowledge that if your wife or children need a ride at any time, for any reason, you can do it.now go get it man...there's no reason why not, and a zillion why you should....
make an appointment tomorrow for driving lessons if you need em....
get comfortable with driving....
you can do it man...it's not that fucking hard.....easier than you imagine....best of luck dude...and let us know when you've got it...
cheers
ex- Pretty much sums it up.canuck
