"To be honest, I'm really fearful of learning - people are lunatics, I fear that if someone cut me off, or acted dangerously around me, I'd go crazy and drive into them in a rage."
I did that all the time.
But ever since the Eternal Traffic Jam Big Bang here I dumped my car and only travel by public transport now.
I think aspiring to owning a car in this day and age is quite simple counterintuitive.
Unless you live on a far edge of for instance, Iceland.

Yay! Bikes! Especially when you park on a curb! Ow!

Don't be telling me you can't ride a bike either. I'm not sure where ice skating and swimming rank in your universe.

holy shit there are a lot of people in this thread that were born with cocks but really don't deserve them.

They may be nicer to you during the winter, but I liked doing the tests over the summer because: our shitty car that doesn't have AC and the testers always want to get the hell out of it.

I just passed this year (I'm 36). I'd get your lessons in now if you can. If you're taking lessons after you finish work if you leave it to winter it will be dark and quite difficult to read the road.
If you want to make it easy on yourself to pass as quickly as you can, learn in an automatic.
Once you pass get a sat nav. It really helps with which lanes you need to take and will help your confidence on the road. When I just passed I was really rattled not knowing exactly where to go getting a sat nav made it real easy.
Oh and apparently it take a lesson each year you are.
- Oh and set a target, I'll pass this year and just make it happen.Ghostschool

go get your license. you just created yourself irational fear. it is nothing big deal with driving. you just need to relax. after a while you will feel very comfortable and you won't even think how are you driving. it will become like driving a bike. all that stuff about rules and what are you doing in general will become routine.
i adore cars, driving, everything connected with it, but i was terrible in driving school. just because of irational fear, fear of failing. it was very hard. somehow i managed to get my license. and after that little toyota yaris, at home waited opel vectra 2.0 150 hp. great machine, but old, with terrible clutch, and of course my father always with me. it was terrible. btw I was 18 years.
next year came new car, brand new citroen c5, great car, a spaceship. and it was succes. after few days I was left alone to drive. Finally I realised that I am good and relaxed finally - just because I am driving by myself.
Hope it helps

i need to learn too... I'm 34, and my wife is expecting our first at the end of November... so need my license by then.
I practiced going around the car park... just the clutch thing is a pain in the arse... perhaps I'll just get an automatic...
Other bummer is there is no undo.

Plus - by not driving - you can justifiably burn loads of coal and shit and put glass and plastic in whichever fucking bin you want.

I'm 31 and I can't drive either.
It's great. Other people drive me around while I sling the seat back and enjoy a few cold beers. Why on earth would I want to give that up?

Don't think anyone's said this - it's hilarious fun to drive your drunk friends to and from the bar. A real hoot.

It's not the operating of the machine that's difficult. It's the paying attention to the traffic signs and signals, and the traffic, and the merging lanes, and the speed limit, while you're rolling a joint while getting head that's difficult.

i've never had to learn how to drive because i've always had a driver.
