im working on moving our hosting at the moment. Basically if you have 2 sites on the same IP range (a block of IP's purchased in one go by the ISP) then should the sites interlink, Google will see them as a family of sites and down grade the link juice passed across. talk to your host about hosting your sites on different C Classes, they should have some free up and down their IP ranges as customers come and go they leave holes which is ideal for this purpose!
re keyword order, yes its preferable, but if you cant get it then the strength of anchor text on inbound links can be used to push google to rank you for a de-jumbled keyword string... just as with any domain.
its the difference between searching for
key term
"key term"hope that helps.
btw if your in the UK and need different class C's then try hotchilli.com and speak to dave who seems on the ball (im not sold yet tho lol!)

Since you're here...I'll ask something which I think a lot of people have probably wondered at some point.
-What have you found to be the most reliable external tool for measuring website traffic to a site? I've tried sites like Alexa (or Wolfram Alpha, which seems to pull its data from Alexa) and Compete, and they seem to give me completely different numbers.
-How accurate is the Google Keyword Tool? Do you view it as an accurate measure of searches for a keyword?
- trooperbill0
something server side like AW stats or raw log analysis is where you get 100% accurate information... the only problem is its littered with bots and other such junk.
theres a nice but expensive service by... fark my minds gone blank, its not webtrends... ARGH! ill have a think about it, anyway its really good as they buy server logs from other hosts and isps which gives you accurate data on your competitors, where theyre getting referrers and loads of other juicy information... DAMNED i can almost see the logo its dark blue and orange!!!!!
The google keyword tool is as good as its going to get... make sure you change the filter from broad to exact and make the country yours oh and use the live stats from last month.

HA! http://www.hitwise.co.uk/ give them a call and get a free demo, just make sure you have a screen capture tool ready to snapshot those juicy stats for free lol

Hey Trooperbill. 2 questions for you
1.) What if you have 2 sites that you want to SEO which have the same layout, similar graphics, but different content. Should I be changing the CSS class names and IDs so each site appears to be more unique? Does this even matter?
2.) How much stock would you put in a "similar page checker" tool like this one: http://www.webconfs.com/similar-…
Thanks!
- trooperbill0
1. no it doesnt matter (think blogger templates, wordpress etc).
2. i'd prefer to use something like copyscape as this focuses on the text content which is what google really looks at. if your duplicating sites always go the extra mile to make them different. i tend to re-write them from scratch to avoid duplication.

hi trooperbill,
what are the parameters to work on to populate the keyword section of the google webmaster tools?
- trooperbill0
You mean the keyword report Webmaster tools? This comes from actual results, theres no way of influencing it (its sketchy at best when populated anyway)
Theres lots of issues with the new webmaster tools UI so dont expect smooth sailing any time soon.

Another one I have wondered about for a while ...
Does the geographical location of the servers a site is hosted on have any real impact on the results you'd get in a local google search?
eg. If a site is hosted in the US, would it impact how well it performs on google.co.uk?
I've had a few clients ask about this when it comes to hosting and the geo-location tool on google webmaster seems to be about as much use as a handbrake on a canoe.
- trooperbill0
Yes, the server does have som bearing tho nothing that cant be overcome with some good geotargetted inbound links.
the geo location tool in webmastertools is a joke. Its better to use meta language and copy to steer a site towards the location you want. i.e. color and colour

Thanks for the advice trooperbill. I recently started using copyscape and have found it to be an invaluable resource for finding instances of duplicate content.
I noticed recently that the rankings for one of the sites I maintain has shot waaaay up after a few relatively minor changes to the text on the homepage to make it's content more unique. All other pages of this particular website had unique content, but the homepage had a few lines of text that were essentially duplicated word-for-word from another one of my client's sites.
My assumption to take away from this is that no matter how well the sub-pages of a site may be optimized, if the homepage has even a small amount of duplicate content it may bring down the rest of the site. Would you agree?

be careful in applying any decisions based on recent listings, the SERPS are all over the place while google impliments new rel=nofollow weights to site...

wow, just found this coo thread.
i've got my own problem with seo. i don't even know which friggin' questions to ask. don't even know where to begin. :/
guess i'm looking for the de facto resource on seo, which might include faq's and basic fundamentals (code and content related). this could be a book, site... don't care. just too apprehensive to take the results from my own google search as relaible resources (ironic?).
