...and that if they can't network a mac then they are mouth breathers

Here is what you need to do:
Start interviewing IT guys that can solve the problem, tell your IT department to present a case on why should they not be replaced if they cant seem to solve a networking problem like that.
Why are you presenting a case to defend yourself? because of their lack of skills?

quit. There are other jobs out there.

I've had this issue too.
Call all your printers and ask them what percent of files they receive are mac to PC. They would say about 95-98% are mac. the rest are Word PC files that a printer can't do shit with. Mac files handle colours better (converting, processing viewing etc.).
The printers would have to spend more time to correctly output a PC file (even in Adobe CS apps).
- I'd say that most of the files are PDFs, which can be created from either a PC or a Mac.monospaced

IT people are less necessary for Macs. They're trying to raise their job security.
I've had zero problems that would require a tech to ever touch my computer - in fact, when they set it up initally (against my wishes) they fucked it all up - I formatted and rebuilt.

gotta love the ole "yeah you can have a mac" and then when you get there and start your job its all PCs and they said "We are afraid of font issues and other stuff" - heres your dell desktop pc with minesweeper

You can give your employees a PC instead of a Mac, but being honest, a PC will never replace a Mac. Not in any real sense. Workflow issues, IT issues, quality issues, performance issues, happiness issues -- across the board. I would never force a Mac user to use a PC and the same goes for a PC user or Linux user. And there isn't any reason to anyway. Everything on the big 3 are nearly perfectly cross-platform these days. Buying a new printer will always be cheaper than the lost productivity, new software licenses and new equipment purchases to switch platforms. These IT guys just don't know what they're doing. They're probably walking around with Microsoft certifications being scared that people will realize they're not an IT expert or networking expert, they're a Microsoft expert. They'd bitch if they walked in to an office with a Linux setup too but they'd just have to make a different argument than price since Linux will always be cheaper. Price is a scapegoat.
- Price is also a scapegoat on Microsofts new ads because they can't compete on anything else. Different story ...itsmitch

i deal with the same thing. the IT guy here insists we use PC... it's cheaper, blah blah blah. no........ it's NOT cheaper. the amount of time spent dealing with problems and the overall lack of efficiency of PC's is horrible. you'd make up the price difference in a fucking week if you bought a mac. We've already had to replace my first PC because of some problem with the HD - I lost a BUNCH of work. and now this new piece of shit i have now is infected with god-knows-what.
i've had my imac for three years now and LOVE working on it. it feels and performs like brand new.

- imac?twokids
- i'm sorry. i mean that i have an imac at home that i use.********

PC's are cheaper. And photoshop and illustrator and so on, they all work the same way in PC or Mac
deal with it. money matters - having a job is better than having a computer that makes you happy.
- yes, money matters...why change kit when the kit you have works fine apart from a printer issue?aldo
- good point. but it may be more than that. in the end IT always wants same configs as much as possibletwokids
- having a properly functioning tool makes you happy, in turn making you a better performer...********
- ...allowing you to keep you JOB.********

It is all personal preference, stay off of 2 girls 1 cup and you won't get a virus you little pervies!

in case those IT guys want to justify their existence in fear of a self managing Mac system, tell them not to worry, our agency had about 30 people, all on Mac OS, and our IT guys always had something to tinker with. Ok, we also bugged them instead of Google with InDesign questions, but there also were some printer problems to solve ;)

Yes, Illustrator and Photoshop work the same way on Mac and PC.
The mac still has many advantage: Automator, Applescript, Quicklook (a godsend), built in servers or every type, the Finder itself, better color profiling, a focus on overall usability (go read the Apple human interface guidelines), Preview (everything from PDFs to OpenEXR for cinema work) ... I could go on all day.
OS X is a better system. Period. The software engineers paid attention to every detail. The security and stability would have been worth it alone. I've never had a virus on my Mac, period. I've had programs crash on me less than 10 times over the course of years. I haven't had to reboot in months. I don't even have to think about my backup system because Time Machine does it automatically and it works -- it's saved my ass several times when I deleted the wrong file in a project. I've never had driver errors. I don't have 1,000 pre-installed crapware programs running in the background slowing down my system like when you buy from a PC vendor. Safari opens in a split second and renders a webpage faster and more accurately than anything on a PC. Actually, go look at PC text rendering while you're at it -- it looks like shit. As does the color. As does the GUI. As does everything else.
Save your money, go ahead. Just quit trashing Mac users because we want something we work on most of the day to work well and be a joy to use.

oh yeah, not to mention the special characters chortcuts on mac, which would take uh alt+someweirdnumberonthenumlockp... on pc.

so your shit wont work with the printer... and you're going to shell out for a bevvy of new computers? Fucking get a new printer.

Look, I would love to have all the best Mac stuff at work and at home...(cinema screen - yes)......but I JUST CANNOT AFFORD IT!!!
Mac culture is cool and all, but it is a little bit like owning a BMW - I just can't do that, and lots of companies cant and wont either.
- you need to look PAST the initial expense of mac and think about how much $ a PC will really cost in the long run.********
- i can't tell you how much work, and the amount of hours i've lost because of unstable PC's. it's incredible.********
- Macs have a very long shelf-life. I can still design on my old G4, almost eight years old now.monospaced
- the point is that these IT guys would maybe like to replace the whole suite of macs because a printer won't network to them...aldo
