I got a mac to make my penis look bigger.

I hated it when I bought my first mac and wrote similar rants on forums (including this one), people said "your mind is stuck in Windows world, you need to drop your sick old habits and let the happiness flourish" or something to that effect. This only made things worse, as you can guess :)

Still, I'd say some of your gripes are based on being used to certain Windows behaviors. Someone who only used mac for years simply wouldn't understand you at all.
I've been using OSX for 3 years now, I am comfortable using Windows but must say I find OSX superior at this stage.

    1. You're absolutely right, for someone used to Windows mouse acceleration OSX's is terrible. With some speeds the mouse can move slower than the cursor on the screen but it gets very fast on once you move it faster. Annoying I know. There is a lot of software to take care of this issue, my choice is USB Overdrive.

    2. I just dragged an image from Firefox to Bridge and then from Bridge to Photoshop to check that. It works. Drag your file onto the application icon in Dock, not the application window.

    3. I use alt to access Polish characters on the keyboard, so moving alt away from space bar is annoying as fuck for me.
I remapped the keys to behave just like they do in Windows.

Simply go to System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Modifier Keys...

    4. Yes! The biggest OSX trap ever. As a Total Commander user from Windows, I use Forklift most of the time instead of Finder - it actually asks you if you want to merge or overwrite.

    • err..#1: cursor moves slower than mouse, then faster when mouse accelerates :)raf

Don't use fucking Firefox, lesson learned

You can easily select a URL from the keyboard. If the cursor is at end of the URL, hold down shift and click the up arrow, URL is then selected, if the cursor is at the front of the URL, hold down shift and press the down arrow..same with all text. hope that helps.

ah thanks people. dragging stuff to the photoshop icon in the dock seems a bit less convinient than the fullscreen application on the other monitor but it will have to do.

forklift seems great. especially with the commander keybindings. Finder must be the most embarrassing product in the apple suite.

And yes i guess most of my issues is because im used to using windows. But from all the complaining and ripping on xp and vista from mac users i thought osx would be alot better. And when i find that the most logical functions of any os is left out i got really dissapointed.

    • also noticed some apps, like adium uses the window style navigating text with home / end buttons.erikjonsson

it's possible to have a smooth workflow in any OS, you just need to learn it. you seem to like vista, why even bother with OS X? just install windows on it and be done.

I think it wasn't until Leopard came out that I really got to like OSX. Before that, there wasn't even a half decent file viewer in it. I couldn't figure out why people kept associating mac with multimedia.

Now, with QuickLook I'm a happy puppy. Press space and instantly preview any graphic file you want. It's a blessing.
Add more file types to QuickLook:
    http://www.quicklookplugins.com/…

As for Firefox, even though it got better with 3.0, it's still not as nicely integrated with system as it is with Windows. Still no right-clicking on bookmarks ffs!
PDFs in Firefox are downloaded and opened in Preview, it's annoying but there is a plugin to tackle that one:
    http://code.google.com/p/firefox…

Be sure to install Perian and Flip4mac - codec packages for video files. VLC seems to be the best video player out there, even if its UI lacks refinement. It usually opens files which QuickTime doesn't recognize, also damaged ones.

TinkerTool lets you adjust some hidden os settings - you might like it.
    http://www.bresink.de/osx/Tinker…

If you've been told simply removing .app package is good for app uninstallation - don't believe it. Luckily one of the useful features of Forklift is its app remover.

One of my favourite system features is easy cloning of the system partition. You can copy your hard drive to an external drive (even while it is running) and launch it from USB on another machine.
Carbon Copy Cloner is a good tool for that.

BTW, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk to make sure the system is launched from the internal drive next time. Hope that helps with your initial problem.

    I'm on a roll apparently..
It wasn't until recently that I found a nice feature of system screen grab app:
normally, CMD+SHIFT+4 lets you crop the image for grabbing (CMD+SHIFT+3 grabs all). But if you press space instead of cropping, you get to choose a full window to grab - even if it's covered with overlaying windows...

    • And holding CTRL will copy into the clipboard instead of making a PNG on the desktop.5timuli

I've been using both OSs for about 6 years now. job/vs/home. I find MS OS better. Faster, crash less, photoshop is far superior working with larger files, all adobe seems to function faster and more reliable. Not too mention all adobe interfaces i like better. The macromedia parts of the adobe package seem to have more glitches, the interfaces are horrible, and they seem to have a lag with every click. Ive found MS OSs have better third party apps, plugins. My systems are usually always equal on hardware. Im still using XP, but have used vista. Vista sp2 was pretty nice. The 64 bit performance was great. My main problems was with GUI design. It seemed to dumb the thing down with user friendly stuff, but a few tweaks and no biggie. Stopped using it because some third party apps i liked didn't support 64 bit yet, so 32bit XP works for now.

Havent used leopard yet, but look forward to its improved file previewer. That is one thing that ive hated about OSX. Apple OS keeps getting more tolerable with every release. Hopefully cs4 and leopard will perform better and close the gap a little more.

    • I always thought my mac was faster with windows. You'll love leopard, bear in mind its ugly 3D dock can be customized ;)raf

Can't we all just pretend to like each other?

  • Leigh0

Erm? Let's not forget OSX came out about 5 years before vista.

  • SoulFly0

it's like you were looking for issues to begin with.. why the need of dragging folders to folders with the same name to merge content? That doesn't sound like an essential everyday task.

    • no while backing up and moving in my stuff from the windows machine to the mac.erikjonsson
    • It is something you do sometimes. If you're used to Windows' merging default action, you're screwed, files are gone.raf

im sorry if i made this look like a pc vs mac bashing thread that was not my intention. The thing is i have always heard so many good things about macs and osx in general and the vista bashing by both camps has been ridiculous. And when i finally make the switch i notice that its actually the other way around.

Alot of the differences like the alt-tab and all the alt bound functions are tied to a key one snap left of the alt key on a windows keybaord. That seems to be done just to set the os apart from windows because it sure is alot less ergonomical for such a frequently pressed key.

Im just very dissapointed in a piece of overpriced equipment. im sorry.

    • The Apple key has been around since BEFORE any windows version ever existed.duckofrubber
    • wrong from the start thenerikjonsson

    my two cents.

first off, let me preface this by saying i was laughing my ass off reading about your troubles. mostly because this was my exact experience when i first started using the mac.

another thing to note. i use both. i will never prefer one over the other overall, but only for certain small tasks.

basically it took me about a week to set up my mac like the pc i'd been using for the last 15 years.

i'm not going to go into the details. just have faith, it can be done. you can change your home/end keys, make the control key act like the command key, etc.

one thing i will recommend is getting a microsoft mouse. microsoft has some 'drivers' you can install on the mac and it does away with that acceleration bullshit.

over the next few months you'll become accustomed to the mac, and you'll have several more bittersweet experiences where one minute you'll understand why everyone switches, and the next you'll feel sorry for the dumb fucks out there who swear by the mac thinking it really is the end-all-be-all.

in the end, you'll have releived yourself from having to contribute to any mac vs. pc thread again, because you'll realize - in that debate, there's never room for more than 1 side.

    good luck

and to the rest of you fuckers who think your platform is better than the others: we don't fucking care.

  • SteveJobs0

    oh, and one more thing.

do not use vista. even bill gates admitted it's a shit OS. stick with XP.

  • wristtattoo0

Right Steve. It's not about what the Mac can do for you, it's what you can do for it.
