Vista and OSX

I bought my first mac book pro last week mainly because i wanted a good looking, reasonably fast and hi-tech laptop.

The only real problem i have had so far with the actual hardware is that i cant have any external hard drives plugged in when im booting because it somehow tries to boot them over the main internal disk. No os on them it just stalls there untill i unplug them.

The main problem is OSX. Here is a list of what makes me want to throw this piece of shit out the window. From the first weeks use.

    1. The mouse acceleration curve.
Its like being back in Win 3.11 It moves like its glued to the table and i keep missing buttons and icons.

    2. Drag and drop.
I cant drag images from firefox into anything else than desktop folders. I cant drag them into bridge. I cant drag documents from bridge into photoshop.

    3. The keyboard
To zoom in windows with icons etc i need to press 2 buttons over vistas 1. All the functions
requiring the alt key pressed like alt-tab. Alt-z etc has me move my thumb in under the left hand to reach the Alt/Option key rather than windows placement where mac has the Command key. What is this for usability making my hand into a claw?

I cant make use of the home/end buttons to mark text. To mark text back and forward in a text box like the url for example i need to let go of the keyboard and reach for the mouse to mark text.

The delete button does not delete in photoshop. The backspace key named delete delete. That backspace/delete key does no longer take me back in windows/browsers. It just deletes. So i dont have any back key, to perform that action i have to press alt/option key and then an arrow key.

    4. File operation
Moving a folder on top of another folder with the same name does not merge content. It overwrights. Recipee for disaster. And 1 times out of 5 when i acess ftp or network resources in software, it crashes.

The list goes on and on and i hate to be a fucking whiner but all the criticism on vista
falls flat compared to osx suffering from basic issues that microsoft solved in win98. If someone else there experienced the same problems i have when switching. Can you please give me some pointers or solutions. I feel like somebody robbed me of $3000

Just trying to move around in photoshop and bridge makes me want to kill someone.

3 reasons why you should not buy one.

You can use arrow keys to select text. Honestly, not sure why you would want folders to merge with the same name. That seems like a recipe for disaster to me.

Plus, a lot of your gripes are OS-specific. Surprise! Vista and OS X are different systems.

I hated it when I bought my first mac and wrote similar rants on forums (including this one), people said "your mind is stuck in Windows world, you need to drop your sick old habits and let the happiness flourish" or something to that effect. This only made things worse, as you can guess :)

Still, I'd say some of your gripes are based on being used to certain Windows behaviors. Someone who only used mac for years simply wouldn't understand you at all.
I've been using OSX for 3 years now, I am comfortable using Windows but must say I find OSX superior at this stage.

    1. You're absolutely right, for someone used to Windows mouse acceleration OSX's is terrible. With some speeds the mouse can move slower than the cursor on the screen but it gets very fast on once you move it faster. Annoying I know. There is a lot of software to take care of this issue, my choice is USB Overdrive.

    2. I just dragged an image from Firefox to Bridge and then from Bridge to Photoshop to check that. It works. Drag your file onto the application icon in Dock, not the application window.

    3. I use alt to access Polish characters on the keyboard, so moving alt away from space bar is annoying as fuck for me.
I remapped the keys to behave just like they do in Windows.

Simply go to System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Modifier Keys...

    4. Yes! The biggest OSX trap ever. As a Total Commander user from Windows, I use Forklift most of the time instead of Finder - it actually asks you if you want to merge or overwrite.

    • err..#1: cursor moves slower than mouse, then faster when mouse accelerates :)raf

You can easily select a URL from the keyboard. If the cursor is at end of the URL, hold down shift and click the up arrow, URL is then selected, if the cursor is at the front of the URL, hold down shift and press the down arrow..same with all text. hope that helps.

ah thanks people. dragging stuff to the photoshop icon in the dock seems a bit less convinient than the fullscreen application on the other monitor but it will have to do.

forklift seems great. especially with the commander keybindings. Finder must be the most embarrassing product in the apple suite.

And yes i guess most of my issues is because im used to using windows. But from all the complaining and ripping on xp and vista from mac users i thought osx would be alot better. And when i find that the most logical functions of any os is left out i got really dissapointed.

    • also noticed some apps, like adium uses the window style navigating text with home / end buttons.erikjonsson

it's possible to have a smooth workflow in any OS, you just need to learn it. you seem to like vista, why even bother with OS X? just install windows on it and be done.

I think it wasn't until Leopard came out that I really got to like OSX. Before that, there wasn't even a half decent file viewer in it. I couldn't figure out why people kept associating mac with multimedia.

Now, with QuickLook I'm a happy puppy. Press space and instantly preview any graphic file you want. It's a blessing.
Add more file types to QuickLook:
    http://www.quicklookplugins.com/…

As for Firefox, even though it got better with 3.0, it's still not as nicely integrated with system as it is with Windows. Still no right-clicking on bookmarks ffs!
PDFs in Firefox are downloaded and opened in Preview, it's annoying but there is a plugin to tackle that one:
    http://code.google.com/p/firefox…

Be sure to install Perian and Flip4mac - codec packages for video files. VLC seems to be the best video player out there, even if its UI lacks refinement. It usually opens files which QuickTime doesn't recognize, also damaged ones.

TinkerTool lets you adjust some hidden os settings - you might like it.
    http://www.bresink.de/osx/Tinker…

If you've been told simply removing .app package is good for app uninstallation - don't believe it. Luckily one of the useful features of Forklift is its app remover.

One of my favourite system features is easy cloning of the system partition. You can copy your hard drive to an external drive (even while it is running) and launch it from USB on another machine.
Carbon Copy Cloner is a good tool for that.

BTW, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk to make sure the system is launched from the internal drive next time. Hope that helps with your initial problem.

    I'm on a roll apparently..
It wasn't until recently that I found a nice feature of system screen grab app:
normally, CMD+SHIFT+4 lets you crop the image for grabbing (CMD+SHIFT+3 grabs all). But if you press space instead of cropping, you get to choose a full window to grab - even if it's covered with overlaying windows...

    • And holding CTRL will copy into the clipboard instead of making a PNG on the desktop.5timuli
  • Leigh0

Erm? Let's not forget OSX came out about 5 years before vista.

  • SoulFly0

it's like you were looking for issues to begin with.. why the need of dragging folders to folders with the same name to merge content? That doesn't sound like an essential everyday task.

    • no while backing up and moving in my stuff from the windows machine to the mac.erikjonsson
    • It is something you do sometimes. If you're used to Windows' merging default action, you're screwed, files are gone.raf

im sorry if i made this look like a pc vs mac bashing thread that was not my intention. The thing is i have always heard so many good things about macs and osx in general and the vista bashing by both camps has been ridiculous. And when i finally make the switch i notice that its actually the other way around.

Alot of the differences like the alt-tab and all the alt bound functions are tied to a key one snap left of the alt key on a windows keybaord. That seems to be done just to set the os apart from windows because it sure is alot less ergonomical for such a frequently pressed key.

Im just very dissapointed in a piece of overpriced equipment. im sorry.

    • The Apple key has been around since BEFORE any windows version ever existed.duckofrubber

Throw it out the window. I'll catch it!

  • monospaced0

As far as using key commands to get things done, most OS X users would say that the placement of the command key, where Windows' Alt key usually is, is a better arrangement.

On the other had, when using Windows, I find myself in awkward, claw-like situations trying to execute complex keyboard commands. It has to do with familiarity, not bad design.
