I think it wasn't until Leopard came out that I really got to like OSX. Before that, there wasn't even a half decent file viewer in it. I couldn't figure out why people kept associating mac with multimedia.

Now, with QuickLook I'm a happy puppy. Press space and instantly preview any graphic file you want. It's a blessing.
Add more file types to QuickLook:

As for Firefox, even though it got better with 3.0, it's still not as nicely integrated with system as it is with Windows. Still no right-clicking on bookmarks ffs!
PDFs in Firefox are downloaded and opened in Preview, it's annoying but there is a plugin to tackle that one:

Be sure to install Perian and Flip4mac - codec packages for video files. VLC seems to be the best video player out there, even if its UI lacks refinement. It usually opens files which QuickTime doesn't recognize, also damaged ones.

TinkerTool lets you adjust some hidden os settings - you might like it.

If you've been told simply removing .app package is good for app uninstallation - don't believe it. Luckily one of the useful features of Forklift is its app remover.

One of my favourite system features is easy cloning of the system partition. You can copy your hard drive to an external drive (even while it is running) and launch it from USB on another machine.
Carbon Copy Cloner is a good tool for that.

BTW, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk to make sure the system is launched from the internal drive next time. Hope that helps with your initial problem.
