Funny ... but nonetheless utterly pointless.
Actually, it's incredibly stupid.
I honestly have no idea why people still use tables.
You know people who kind of shy away from technology because they're too "old fashioned"? It's like that, except incredibly hypocritical. They'd rather use less efficient, outdated technology just because it's old hat to them.
- Because it's easier.Jaline
- It's really not to be honest. It may be easier from an initial development standpoint, but in terms of future updates and the like ... it's maddening.flavorful
- like it's maddening. DIV/SPAN tags have so much more flexibility and also do so without two extra tags being needed.flavorful
- needed (TR/ TD). I guess it's one of my pet peeves.flavorful
- Well it's definitely one of my pet peeves, I go ape shit at work when I view source on new R&D work.flavorful
- Look at it this way: nobody's getting hired these days for being "great at HTML tables" on their resume.mg33
- tables are so limiting...css is so easy and versatile!sputnik2

People who would use tables in this day and age make me think they also:
Resist any urge to place a jpg anywhere on a site, using only a gif where appropriate to keep load times down, complete disregard for the growing prevalence of broadband access.
Still spend an insane amount of time researching and adding meta keywords, even though they are not utilized by any of the major browsers anymore for ranking.
Still use some kind of construction worker gif to tell you the site is under construction.
Obsess over analytics reports even though nobody goes to their site, choosing to measure site success over hits rather than income generated (if it's a business).

- Obviously this person wasn't around before tablelesss design was the norm. Also how do you plan on coding your emails? Most emails needed to be coded in tables without any css. Some allow inline css though. Last time I looked, web designers did emails as well. If you are a real web designer you should be able to hand code both tables and tableless on a napkin.graphiknature

using tables to code is like a spayed dog humping your leg.
a useless exercise that doesn't get the desired result and you have the added shame if anyone saw it happen

People who use css for layout make me think they:
- Paint their living room with a toothbrush.
- Get their work printed in china & have it shipped back to them.
- Put their clothes on backwards and then switch them around to the right way while they're still wearing them. You can intermix tables and CSS as layout and still have clean readable code. I've seen CSS-only layouts that were just as much of a brain ache to decipher.

The funny thing is, on their main site:

A lot of emails are still being coded using tables. Some vendors allow you to use inline css though. Either way I code by hand and can do both fairly easily. My question is when are people going to stop coding for IE6.
- I have been seeing more sites that have a note to users that the site is not coded for and will not look right in IE. With links to other browsers. Would like to see more examples of this.scenek

the idea of using absolutely no tables and using CSS for everything on a site is for uber-coder douchebags who probably do it just to brag that the site they created is "table-less"
- Tables are for tabular data, nothing more.jamble
- haha.....that was the original intent sure....but to say they are used for nothing more is a joke.designbot
- I agree with design bot. If you can code both you know where and when to use them.graphiknature

To me, it's like the history of metalurgy. Sure, you can use brass to make your armor and weapons and shit, but the minute you learn to make steel fucking bronze goes out the window.
- +10airey
- That is a great analogy.flavorful
- I still make my armor out of bronze, but I've recently given up on tables. Hard headed, yes... unwilling to adapt to new tech, no.andrewwwahlin

flav, I meant other people believe it's easier.
I prefer using other methods, but tables have their place.

pffft
image maps are even easier, I can do them in photoshop.

I'm going to code my portfolio in Frames to see how many of your heads explode.

- LOL iFrames and Netscape son!graphiknature

surely the only people banging about css being bad are those that can't get their head around it? css is a nightmare to start with (or at least was for me) but once you get up and running simply makes the table-days seem shite. tables are excellent for tabular data but there's no other place for them anymore - if you can use css effectively. if you prefer to use tables go nuts though. it's a free(ish) world in many places.
- I have used tables at every agency I have worked at for emails.graphiknature

Don't be lazy—learn CSS layouts.
<table>
<tr><h1>tables are not meant for page layout</h1></tr>
</table>
