What's wrong with using tables, if its done properly (and more importantly it looks GOOD!) what is the big deal? most people are not programmers and will never know (or care) if the site was made on one or the other.
On the other hand, if the site looks bad (composition wise, bad color combinations, default blue links, etc) they will notice that (not all, but most) because is what they see, most people don't look at code right?)
This comes from a designer that knows nothing about coding (as you will see on my personal site) but I'm curious to learn, if I ever run into a video tutorial that explains how to use CSS on dreamweaver (again, I'm a visual person, I refuse to code) I will check it out and do my best to learn
(please if you happen to know of good beginners video tutorials, post away! just make sure they are on dreamweaver, that is the tool I'm most comfortable with, I know you programmers hate it as much as designers hate fireworks, but hey... thats life :) )

- You sound like a stubborn idiot, refusing to learn. Blame the lack of "tutorials". Moron.craighooper
- Ever looked at a tables based site on a mobile device??jasonistaken

hey that is some progressive thinking there Meeklo..
Who cares if the earth goes around the sun or vice versa.. we're never going to go there.. I mean I'm not a scientist or anything.. but Jeez.. why can't things just stay as they are.. Earth is the center of the universe, going to far in any direction and I'll walk off the edge.. and my layouts are done using tables.. It's all fine!? Why change?!
- read again please, make sure you see the part where I said I'm open to learn it.Meeklo

- Still sound like a douche, Meeklo...craighooper

Example of why CSS is superior when updating a site... content or layout.
"Lets swap the positions of the left and right columns in the layout, it presents the content more logically"
"Okay, let me just swap the float from left to right and vice versa. Done." No need to look at the site markup. Not even a need to use include files.
Can tables do that?
- TheBlueOne0
Whenever I see these arguments these days I think it's like asking "Well my pogo stick gets me to church on time, why do I need to use one of them new fangled outghie-mob-iles fer?"
- sigg0
Yes ETM, and the next thing you know because you just told the PM, Client, Boss, (whomever) that changes like that only take a few seconds you just opened the floodgates to "Comon Dave, don't give me that bullshit. I just saw you switch columns from left to right in two seconds. Don't fucking tell me it's going to take you 3 weeks to completely redesign and redevelop my 10,000 page website. STOP SMOKING YOUR DOOBIES AND GET MY SHIT DONE."
Point. Tables.
- Of course I'm just yanking peoples chains. I'd never code in tables. EVER. It's just funny the hate for them.sigg
- So, you're union, eh?TheBlueOne
- So you clearly confirm that tables are not efficient. Thanks for supporting CSS.ETM
- IT WAS A JOKE ETM! But yes, tables are shite.sigg
- Sorry, I guess I needed to add a smile at the end of my comment.

Winnie:
my initial question "what is wrong with using tables?"
is an honest question, it was never meant to be read as in, a close minded person remark, I'm actually curious.I know this guy who yaps and yaps about how great CSS is, but he is so focused on it, that he forgets the most important thing (at least for me) a good looking, well balanced layout.
he talks about how important is to know css, and take classes and I look at his sites and I feel like.. man.. you should put the CSS thing on the burner for a bit and learn basic design theory because your sites don't look good at all.
Maybe is because I'm more of a graphic designer in general terms rather than a web designer/ programmer.
I'm just being honest.
So here goes again, what is so wrong with building a site with tables?
- TheBlueOne0
A "good looking, well balanced layout." has nothing to do with tables or css..that has to do with the designers skill. However, CSS is the superior and more effective tool to achieve that end.
Just sayin'...
- TheBlueOne0
...and a "good designer" should be one who will work with the best tools and techniques at his disposal to suit the given problem, as any other profession does.
I expect the carpenter I hire to show up on the job with working and up to date tools to build a house. If he shows up with an 18th century wood chisel and cast iron nails and says "Well, that's how they did it in the 18th century and those buildings are still solid." I'd say "Great, I admire you ability with these tools, now you can go and build historically accurate recreation villages at EPCOT and get off my property."
- So you'd never hire Bob Villa or the dude who builds incredible furniture on HGTV with old tools?sigg
- For shame.sigg
- well, in my way of thinking, I don't care what brand of hammer is used as long as the job is done properlyMeeklo
- you can have the latest tools and still suck metallic balls, so this statement flies both waysMeeklo
- just give me that at leastMeeklo
- What if the carpenter shows up with the nicest hammer in the world? Just a hammer?JeeTee
- lol. talk about the biggest backfire in history eh?sigg
- sigg0
I LOVE MACS BTW! PCs ARE SHIT!

well, that remark was made because I would think a user browsing a site will be directly more affected by a bad design, than what technology was used to build it.- True, but you're talking aesthetics, we're talking craft. Related, but different.TheBlueOne
- right, well again.
I'm a graphic designer, not really a web designer, so my concerns differ a bitMeeklo - I do both. Makes a huge difference.TheBlueOne
