I quit smoking Feb 4th, haven't smoked a cig since. Used Chantix. Works great, lots of side effects though but the trade off was well worth it. Been eating healthier and working out a ton since too. Feel a ton better, have a lot more energy during the day, and mucho happier.

do you guys think deep down there is a part of every smoker that would like to quit? or would you say its like 50/50?
great advice so far, people!

One thing that's useful is to recognize that it's a powerful addiction. If you were trying to quit heroin you would probably take time off work and board yourself in your room for a few days like in Trainspotting, or even check yourself in to the hospital. On the other hand people think they can go cold turkey off cigarettes while continuing the pressures of everyday life, but it's very difficult. It wouldn't be completely crazy to take some time off work and try to plan out some time where you were focusing on nothing else but quitting.
After the initial couple weeks, the most important thing is to change your lifestyle. If you go out drinking a lot and are use to having a cigarette in your hand, trust me, you will relapse. If you are used to smoking weed once in a while and having a cig it will be that much more difficult too. After about a year or so, I now have zero desire for a cig, even when I am stressed or completely wasted, it just doesn't appeal to me, so yes it does get easier after a while.

I know a guy who is, after 7 years of abstinence, back on 2 packs a day, unfiltered. for some it is indeed like heroin, others don´t seem to have much of a problem with quitting.
it´s quite complex thing; predispositions, individual personality stuff and so forth, it´s not simply about mental discipline. and then there´s worse things than the reduced life-span from smoking. the health issue would only account for something if you would eliminate all other vices too, the alcohol, the food, lack of exercise, stress. seems kinda pointless to just change the habit for another one, like with gum, working out or whatever.
I agree with e-pill´s first statement, the thing about enjoying life, smoking or not smoking. with his 2nd post, the one with the pussy remark, not so much.

Gave up on the 18th December last year. Read about a story in the papers about someone suffering with enphysemia. Really sad. Anyway, read that and that was it.
I suffer with asthma you see and apart from the obvious (cancer) enphysemia would be a higher risk for someone like me.
The Irony of it now is, I hardly ever suffer from asthma after stopping smoking. Stopped without any aid - patches, gum etc. got through the cold turkey part and totally over the addictive element of it. Give it up!

Funny you should mention that. I'd been wanting to quit for a while and finally got this book:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Allen-Ca…I quit on the day after thanksgiving (literally, cold turkey) and haven't had one since. It was a lot easier after I read that book. No NRT aids (gum/patches), no withdrawal or anything.
I'd tried on numerous other occasions, but this one worked for me. I recommend the book to anyone serious about quitting.

quit 2 years ago as I finally realized what a dumb ass habit it was, waste of money, makes you stink and there is nothing worse than kissing a smoker.

I smoked for about 7 years. I read that book "the easy" by allen carr while I was still smoking and it actually helped a lot. Havent looked back and havent had a cigarette since (5 years).
I dont miss it at all. I have all this extra time during the day and saved so much cash.

I started smoking when I was around 13 years old, and didn't stop till I was like 23 or something like that (with a 1 year gap in somewhere in the middle) I lost count but I', sure its been over 4/5 years that I don't smoke now.
sometimes when I'm at a bar a little buzzed I think about it, but I know if I put another cigarette in my mouth I will get hooked again. So better not even touch it.

does anyone here get defensive when someone else tells them that they need to quit, even though they know that they need to?

I just finished smoking in November, I have tried to quit a number of times now, this time I used the patch and Acupuncture.
I strongly recommend Acupuncture, don't know why it helped me but it did. No cravings at all!

make a big thing of it. set a date and tell everyone you gonna quit then
remember that a craving only lasts a few minutes.. so sit on your hands for three minutes and you've just saved yourself from starting again. thats all it takes
nicotine gum helped me a lot

I quit when my wife got pregnant, no bigger need to quite than a child - so go have kids. Easy. Cheaper than nicorette too.
