it seems like at this time of year, most people are resolving to change or accomplish something in the following year.
has anyone here quit smoking? what made you decide you wanted to? how did you finally do it?
cheers to 09'.

What made you decide?
The thought of dying a horrible death was a big motivator.

thinking about it. I signed myself up top climb Mt. Whitney in June 14,000 f-in feet. So yeah, I will need some lung capacity.
Will just miss it when throwing back the makers marks....

Chicago prices is what made me stop:
$8.00 a pack plus tax @ 10% comes to around 550 a year..
time to stop ... on and for my health

i always notice 1 thing about people who "quit" smoking cigs...
they keep a date of when it happened, but really they are just keeping track of when they will start again...
quiters fail... dont quit smoking... JUST STOP!!! like you never did!!
so when if by chance someone asks you for a cig [fag] you just say you dont smoke, not i quit 11 weeks 14 days and 5 hours!!! oh yeh it was 8:03am wednesday!!!fuck that!!!
JUST STOP SMOKING!!!
or else you're a pussy!!!you pussy!!!

you can never really quit. probably one of the hardest thing to do.

I stopped nearly 2 years ago cold turkey, after 18 years of heavy smoking. it's no big deal at all if you really want to quit. the physical need is totally gone after a couple of days, but mentally it got really hard after a couple months. if you really want to stop you just have to move throught that, and it does get easier eventually. after about a year. and now, after 2 years, I hardly ever think of smoking anymore.

I quit ages ago, no idea why, I really liked it :).

Just quit. If it doesn't work out, you're a loser but nevertheless quit again. Soon when pulling one out you'll know the feeling of failure that gets to you as soon as it's lit. Being sick of quitting and failing at it will help you quit.

i quit six months ago.. cold turkey, from a pack a day for nine years to nothing.
and yes, i did think about it for months before, so i was really determined and it wasn't as hard as i thought it would be .. just stop, that's it.
- and it was money and health that made me quit... and i quit before the smoking ban, so that wasn't a reason, but it helped.Jordy

If you plan to quit but are shitting yoursef about it then you aren't ready so don't bother... all you will achieve is a few days of misery followed by a lingering sense of failure.
I'm not saying foget about giving up, but you definitely need to give it more thought before committing yourself to stopping. Forget al the bullshit about New Year's resolutions, do it quietly at a time of year to suit you.

I started not smoking cigarettes five years ago.
My dad was dead sick from cancer so i pretty much had the motivation. Then my brother gave me a very nice book "the easy way" by Allan Carr. Normally im not into these selfhelpery books, but this one actually caugt my attension. After reading the last page i put out my cig and havnt given it a thoght since. Worked for me :)

my mom passed away in 2001 from lung cancer at the age of 50.
my mom missed just seeing her 1st grandson (my nephew), she will miss my wedding, my younger bro's wedding, the birth of any more grandchildren, and so much more.
i miss her more than my own breath.
yea, smoking is a good idea,,, (sarcasm to the max)

I quit about ten years ago. I started smoking at 14, quit at 29. Used to smoke probably a pack and half a day. I had taken up martial arts at 26 and was tired of getting winded in the class, and besides I started to live healthier, so the smoking had to go.
What made it stick though was smoking like three packs and getting hammered on New Years Eve and then waking up with a godawful hangover. I couldn't smoke if I tried...even the following day I was still pretty sick and couldn't even look at a cig. Three days into the New Year I was like "Fuck I've made it three days already might as well keep going...".
I backslid a few times, but always when drinking copious amount, which made the hangovers worse and made me realize the special tang that cigarettes added to hangovers. An older gentleman gave me some great advice on quitting which worked for me, he told me "You'll always crave a cigarrette, but whether you actually smoke one or not, the craving will go away." And he was right.
But if you do quit I suggest also taking up some kind of physical activity and also finding something to do with your mouth - chew gum, suck on toothpicks... and avoid the usual cigarette triggers for a while - you know - bars, coffee...as much as you can. Change your routine, in other words so you don't have as many triggers.
It's well worth it. Quit.
