What is the current value of Graphic Design? —
Has Adobes marketing of its cut down consumer versions of pro software caused everyone to believe they can be a designer?
Why doesn't every client goto 25poundlogo.co.uk?

Kind of like asking why doesn't everyone live in a hut when they can afford a million dollar house. If people can afford better, they will pay for it.

ukit — in terms of logo design, who's to say spending £50,000 with say Wieden Kennedy will produce better results than 25poundlogo.
It is entirely possible for 25PL to produce a much more client pleasing logo than WK. Thats all we work for right? To please the client and take the money?

- Have you looked at the logos on that site??lherb
- yeah, yeah and yeah!studderine
- Dunno about you but I thought W+K was an advertising agencies...Dancer

Studderine — Good point, not only that, I over heard the other day two teenage girls (14/16) bickering that one of their friends had photoshopped photos of herself to appear slimmer. Its almost strange now to meet teens and those in the early 20's whom don't know how to use Photoshop. Im not claiming Photoshop is 'THE' design tool, however kids are getting themselves familiar with this software from a very early age.
Ukit — Technically they appear more than capable of producing work to standard with WK. Im sure they run the same software as WK, use the same machines and drink the same coffee.
Now going back to the teen girl in her bedroom learning Photoshop. Its very 'cool' to have the Adobe CS Suite on your computer, kids spend hours creating websites for recreational purposes, importing video and editing video, designing posters for a mates band. Coming from a Graphic Design point of view, they can indeed spend years of their teens learning Illustrator, Photoshop etc. but what they wouldn't learn, possibly, is the key, root fundamentals of what clear and communicative Graphic Design is. They could very easily post themselves on the internet as a designer, pleasing clients and making money whilst at the same time undercutting every design studio in town.
- this is somewhat true. there are plenty of kids who i went to school who call themselves "designers"studderine
- they charge clients 1000 bucks for a full business system. the client is happy, they get paid. so in the end..studderine
- its not really hurting anyone.studderine

Same software and machines maybe, but I highly doubt they possess the same artistic skill, understanding of brand strategy etc. that a company like W + K brings. I mean, c'mon, this should be fairly obvious. Does that mean everything W + K produce will be brilliant? Of course not, but they are not really operating on the same level.

everyone can move a paintbrush around. not everyone can make the finished product look good or have purpose. But practice makes perfect, I have no doubt that some of those teenage photoshop users are going to be giving us a run for our money in 5-10 years.

I was watching TV the other night and there was an ad for Littlewoods, who (for non UK readers) are a very third rate department store. Very low class.
They are running some TV ads at the moment for the Christmas season and though its possible to pick them apart on some levels, in terms of their productions values, their gloss, the aspirations they project and the glamour they portray, they look like a hollywood production job. Its all digital, and I have no doubt they were composited on a standard G5 in a shitty cluttered room in a second tier ad agency somehwere in London for almost no money.
They look that good because they just look like what everyone else is doing, and it was easy to emulate because we all have the same tools at our disposal.
Ideas really stand out as being exceptional and valuable now though. Ideas was the one thing that was disregarded when we all went digital and everything got glossy.

It's unfortunately a unique dilemma with the public perception of the graphic design profession. I mean, we can all go to a Home Depot and buy building materials, but that probably isn't going to make any of us think that we are Mies van der Rohe.
Sadly, there's often a tendency for "lack of professional trust" towards educated designers unlike most other professions.
I don't have an "answer" or "solution" per say, but I do know this is an issue that provides a lot of designers with severe frustration.- Good point.
There's no publicly recognised accredation for designers, unlike architects, doctors, etc.********
- Good point.

I've got a ladder and a paint-roller but I'm not a professional house painter. Sure, I could probably tell people I was and they may even believe me, or better yet hire me. Some may see no difference between my work and that of a *read* professional house-painter, some will. For those that don't see the difference, better is of no value.
If people don't see the value in something, they won't pay more. There'll always be some kid with the same (or similar) tools as you who's willing to do the job on the cheap. It's like that in every industry.
Hey — maybe, just maybe graphic design has been over-valued recently.- especially dentistry. Teen dental hobbyists are ruining it for the rest of us!monNom

I have a video camera but would not be able to film Citizen Kane. etc etc

how did W+K get into any of this....?

If you can't see tell the difference or you think your clients can't then maybe you have the right to be worried.

One profession that Adobe will probably never digitise and make available to 15 year olds is architecture becuase buildings really have to stay standing up and not kill people, similarly houses have to 'work' and home decoration has to look acceptable: we all know what dripped paint looks like, or shabby egdes, or wonky shelves.
But who knows what a good logo is?
Wolf Olins?
2012 Olympics says no.

Thanks all for some great comments. Its the kind of debate you could have for hours — much like, what is Graphic Design? I appreciate very much what everyone has said, just goes to show the great minds that really exist on QBN. Enough rimming, I'll have to read through them all again and come up with some conclusion that we can all debate on.
