I've always thought it was harder to find talented people. Maybe RD has been through the same situation so many times that he really just didn't want to waste his time with small agencies saying the same ole same ole to him. Maybe he already had a few offers from companies willing to offer good pay. The AD, who should know the range of what they are willing to pay already, should have been more professional, even though RD was not entirely correct. He should have mentioned a 'range' based off of talent/experience etc. (Remember you're prolly hiring him for his RD abilities and not his phone talk abilities). Now AD has potentially lost any chance of working with RD and prolly will have a really hard time finding another RD. RD might have been a totally different person than this short 20 second convo. RD just wanted some time to think about it, AD cut the convo short and sounded real obnoxious. I've always learned it best to never burn bridges, no matter what, with both ends of the stick.

Whether or not he had a valid point or may have been lowballed, the RD showed a pretty high level of unprofessionalism.

i agree with above 2 posts. AD could have show more professionalism as well. i mean i see where RD is coming. we've all been through the same bs more than once. but that phone call is your 20 sec selling point. unfortunately it was in the details of this conversation that he blew his chances. i hope other places will give him a shot to let his work speak for itself regardless of a whack phone convo

I don't think he was being unprofessional, I think he was just being upfront and not beating around the bush. Nothing wrong with that. If the guy had 20 more interviews to go to, he may want to shorten that list by getting the money issue out of the way to start and that you're within his min range. (This is all assuming he really is a so-called 'rockstar' and you've checked his folio: Someone worth dealing with shortly but in the end produces stellar work. Those kinds of folks are really hard to find). It's also a 20-sec selling point for the company not just the interviewee, it works both ways. I few friends of mine are real jackasses when you speak business to them, but after all that's settled, you find out they can really create awesome work and are a pleasure to work with. Again, some ppl just don't have as much phone charm as others. Others just aren't as good communicators as others. Think AD should have dug a little deeper before ending the convo so quickly. that's all. maybe try sending an email out and reworking that convo again instead of letting it go.

AD: Good morning. Studio A.
RD: Hi there, this is rockstar designer. I'm returning your call regarding the position for graphic designer.
AD: Yes, thanks for getting back to me. Are you interested in coming in for an interview?RD: Sure. Could you give me a little background on what the company does?
AD: Sure. we blah blah blah
RD: Great, thanks, when can I come in?
AD: I can get you in on Thursday, 3pm.
RD: Ok great.
AD: Alright, did you have anymore questions. Do you know how to get here?
RD: Yes. I can't remember if the salary was on the job posting. Do you have a range of compensation?
AD: Actually, it wasn't included in the post. Salary would be in the range of $ to $ based on your skills and experience.
RD: Ok greatAt this point it can be resolved whether it's too low or not.
No harm done. Everyone's happy. And the Chick of the Day thread still live on

regardless of his work being nice, he sounds like an ass. I wouldn't hire an ass like that if he were the son of Milton Glaser.

I never bring up the issue of money and prefer to avoid it until the interviewer or hr throws out their expectation. If it's higher than mine great. If not it's up for discussion. If I'm interviewing at a place I figure I've seen some worth in it one way or another. Worst case scenario I've manged to be introduced to someone who has some control over hiring at the company and if I can make a good enough impression it might benefit me in the long run even if I don't take the immediate job.

I never go to an interview with out having the money shat out of the way. I do not think he was out of line.

perfectly ok to ask what the salary range is, the problem with this situation is the boy looking for a job is quite obviously a total bellend.
- sputnik20
i can't believe people here are w/RD on this one. who is offering the job, and who wants it here? if you want a job, you drive 40 minutes, find out about the company, be polite. otherwise why bother sending your resume if it's all beneath you? FFS what a wanker.
- my first gig was 1.5h to 2 hours away. depending on traffic. :-)akrokdesign
- wow, motivation! this RD jerk clearly couldn't be bothered to go above and beyond for anything.sputnik2

this is funny.
assuming the guy or gal is a "rockstar", i don't see a problem with getting straight to the point especially if there are a lot of other potential interviews to get to.
all the same, if it had been me, i would have handled it differently.

come on, this guy was a total tool who will soon starve to death in the gutter
- I hopehallelujah
- just before I dohallelujah
- but before I do I'd like to smack him in the facehallelujah

Pair of fannies were involved in that phone conversation, the guy shouldnae have been so blunt and same goes for the guy who was the employer.
- Milan0
did he actually call himself a "rockstar" designer? I'd get him to come in for an interview just to kick him in the face

- haha no he didn't call himself that. but he sounded like onebrandelec

if anything. i think the AD could've asked RD his salary expections and RD would give his range and it takes off from there. i think the days when this was taboo at first meet are almost gone. i still have to agree with sputnik.. no one's trying to act like an asshole, but RD is that one asking for a shot - give it some class
