About a month ago we were out seeing my wife's family, and I got in a big conversation with my father in law, as usual, about politics. He hates Obama, hates democrats, and truly believes Fox News shows "the other side of the story (as truth)."

We got to talking about global warming; he pretty much believes that man has nothing to do with it simply by telling me that there's more ice than ever before in Antarctica (thus it isn't melting, those global warming isn't really happening.)

Luckily Vice News on HBO did an entire episode after that about the impacts on Antarctica. It was great to learn how the deniers skew facts about sea ice vs land ice - exactly what my father-in-law is falling for. Sea ice is cyclical. There's more in winter months formed from water already in the ocean. There's less when it melts, but there's no change in water volume for sea ice. Land ice that's melting, on the other hand, directly impacts the volume because it's water that wasn't in the ocean at first, but gets added it.

That's pretty much 3rd grade science at work there in terms of understanding what happens when you add more ice/water to water that was already there. So it's really frustrating and almost offensive to see it be politicized the way it is, especially by people who don't benefit in any direct way from the policies or stances their elected leaders take to deny what's happening.

And I'll even say this: let's say man doesn't have anything to do with it. It's just the global environment. The outcome is the same: water levels rise, coastlines change, populations are displaced, resources are affected, and people have to scramble to solve a likely unsolvable problem.

What would it hurt to think about how we'd tackle that problem? What would it hurt to hypothesize how the geography of Florida would change if ocean level rise gets bad in 20-30 years? What would it hurt to develop an action plan to deal with those affects?

I know this one country which consume 1/4 of the entire earth energy, but he's only like 5% of the entire planet population, maybe if they walk the talk or talk the walk, (wtv the idiom is) this planet would be paradise (I swear, I've seen the pic in the watchtower mag),

but instead they complain that two other countries which total almost 40% of the earth's population are to blame,

maybe if they renounced the whole quality of life they're used to and start getting their shit together Global warming/climate change/catch scary name could be averted in like 150 years,

but nope, they will find some boogeyman industrials and put all their anger onto them instead of looking in the mirror while typing like ants on their $2000 computer that is full of rare mineral extracted from the blood of poor congolese...

    yeaaaaaah hypocrisy,

Republican funded Skeptic finds he now agrees global warming is real

A prominent physicist and skeptic of global warming spent two years trying to find out if mainstream climate scientists were wrong. In the end, he determined they were right: Temperatures really are rising rapidly.

One-quarter of the $600,000 to do the research came from the Charles Koch Foundation, whose founder is a major funder of skeptic groups and the conservative tea party movement. The Koch brothers, Charles and David, run a large privately held company involved in oil and other industries, producing sizable greenhouse gas emissions.

So for all of you folks who think the world is going to end if we don't do something about man made global warming....I am curious what you are all doing to help the situation? You have passion about this subject, obviously...but is that passion actually transitioning into making a difference? You get all uptight when I post Al Gores Carbon footprint information, but the fact is that he is the man who almost single handedly helped bring Global Warming into public awareness. So the fact that he himself does not practice what he preaches says A LOT.

I fear that many of you here on QBN are no different than Gore. You speak big words on an internet forum but in real life you don't do shit. Words are meaningless without action, and even as a contender of man made global warming I am responsible with the way I live and how I impact the environment. Are you? I am honestly curious. If I knew you in real life and you really stood behind the words you spoke with actions, it would impact me even if we disagreed. I would probably find myself inspired by your actions and willing to follow you based on them alone. It would make words seem pretty meaningless. Nobody is for ruining the earth. But for those of you who are so adamant about this issue, your energy would be better invested in making a difference.

    • is this you backing up your point?lowimpakt

Im on boat with change is going to happen, cooler or hotter. If it gets hot it will then likely cool, or vice versa. But i am on the fence about how drastic human involvement will be too global temperature change. Its a pretty big world with many events effecting everything, human and non human, then likely also some cosmic factors of flares, gamma radiation bursts, changing rotations, axis, electromagnetic fields.....and i find it hard to believe the hype that if we continue our path we will alter temperature enough to ruin us. I just don't see us as being that significant, and we can't continue using fossil fuels at current rates with growth curves since their just isnt enough. And since our population growth is still rising even if their was a temperature change through human faults and tons died, then i'd call that balancing things out. But still just seems like some modern day doomsday profiteering. Perhaps religion has lost its fizzle.

    • You are not a scientist.DrBombay

Let's just concur there is indeed a very real debate within the scientific community. There's lots of misinformation happening on both sides. I remember digging into a pro man made global warming article and finding out the study was funded and organized by an environmental organization!

I say let both sides get the proper media attention and let the conclusion be arrived at based on the best minds in discussion and research about it. What I saw personally in the past, is lots of one-sided media hype on the issue. The BBC article I posted is at least evidence ( I think) that the opposing side (against the idea of man made global warming) is actually starting to gain more credibility and momentum.

    • So an Env org cares about the environment and an oil company cares about what?DrBombay
    • it hasn't been a real debate since like the 60s, its been fact and the corporations and governments just went to denial mode.eieio
    • That's false...plain and simple. Otherwise how to you explain all the contrary information and opposing views from the scientific community?designbot
    • Rick, the point he's making is that both have an obvious stake in the outcome. In fact, their survival depends on the outcome.mathinc
    • If it is "fact" how do you explain all the contrary information and opposing views from the scientific community?designbot
    • oops...double post.designbot
    • Tommy, what I said makes no sense whatsoever?DrBombay
    • It makes sense if you're trying to explain the concept of good and evil to a 5 year old. But in this case, no.mathinc
    • If you think it's as easy as saying that environmental org produces agenda-less fact, you're wrong.mathinc
    • It seems silly to be shocked that a manmade global warming study was sponsored by an Env organization.DrBombay
    • I thought KFC sponsored them all!!! OMGWTF!DrBombay
    • Who is shocked? .. the way I read designbots post is that there IS misinformation on both sides.mathinc
    • Is the word "shocked" really a deal-breaker in my statement?DrBombay
    • Talking to you is like riding a merry-go-round on acid.mathinc
    • so its "media hype" when they disagree with you? wtf?spifflink
