On April 16, at 8:41 pm, Fred McWoozy said this in response to a posting about the recent SEC case against Goldman Sachs:
"Did any of you guys read the Goldman sachs story? You're all acting like this is some big deal. These aren't criminal charges. They're civil charges. When are you guys going to get away from being 'headline' readers?"
Then he jacked my style and commented on himself (after hating me for it):
"CIVIL COMPLAINT. CIVIL COMPLAINT."And today, we learn this:
Prosecutors Said to Start Inquiry Into Goldman
By LOUISE STORY and MICHAEL J. de la MERCED
Published: April 29, 2010http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/3…
It's a mixed bag, because as the article states:
"Federal prosecutors would face a higher bar in bringing a criminal case against Goldman, whose role in the mortgage market came under sharp scrutiny this week during a marathon hearing in the Senate. In contrast to civil cases, the burden of proof is higher in criminal ones, where prosecutors must prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
The stakes are high for Goldman, but they are also high for the United States attorney’s office. Prosecutors from the Eastern District of New York lost a case last year filed against two hedge fund managers at Bear Stearns, whose collapse presaged the turmoil on Wall Street.
Prosecutors built much of that case around internal e-mail messages at Bear Stearns, much the way the S.E.C. and senators have pointed to e-mail at Goldman in which employees had disparaged investments that they were selling to their customers.
In the end, however, prosecutors were unable to prove to a jury any criminal wrongdoing by the Bear Stearns employees."
- But hey, at least it's not a civil case...right Fred?luckyorphan

I do have an honest question for cnaps:
Are you cool with a progressive tax? Just curious. Honestly. Not trying to start a fight...I'm just trying to have a conversation.Because, the way I see it, the Tea Party, the president and the political left in this country all believe that Wall Street has made enough money, and they should focus their efforts and energy on supporting the society that bailed them out when they needed help. Only the political and intellectual right seem to be protecting them from any moral responsibility.
So, I guess I just have to ask cnaps if he instead just supports Wall Street's successes, and would rather they were simply not held responsible for the damage they caused?
Of course, this is open to anyone. cnaps was just the last to toss it out there, and I know I won't get a thoughtful response from JazX or Fred, so...have at it peeps.
mathinc? You there?

Worse than Exxon Valdez
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/20…
An oil spill that threatened to eclipse even the Exxon Valdez disaster spread out of control with a faint sheen washing ashore along the Gulf Coast Thursday night as fishermen rushed to scoop up shrimp and crews spread floating barriers around marshes.
The spill was bigger than imagined – five times more than first estimated – and closer. Faint fingers of oily sheen were reaching the Mississippi River delta, lapping the Louisiana shoreline in long, thin lines.
"It is of grave concern," David Kennedy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told The Associated Press. "I am frightened. This is a very, very big thing. And the efforts that are going to be required to do anything about it, especially if it continues on, are just mind-boggling."

BP shares tumbled more than 8 percent Thursday, and the company has lost roughly $25 billion in market value since an offshore rig it hired in the Gulf of Mexico exploded last week and started spewing huge amounts of oil.

I think this spill is a great test case for those who say the government should take its hands completely off the economy because private companies will always be able to accomplish things faster and more efficiently.
Here we have something where the government was not involved and one of the world's largest, most capable private companies had a chance to clean up the spill entirely on their own.
How'd they do?
"So far, the company’s failure to stop the seepage from the underwater well has frustrated government officials. On Thursday, President Obama offered the assistance of an array of government agencies, including the military, while noting that, under federal law, “BP is ultimately responsible for funding the cost of response and cleanup operations.”
Looks like a heck of a job.

Bill to block illegal immigrants’ benefits fails, House’s margin narrows as calls to change system grows

The Democrat-controlled Massachusetts House came within a razor-thin margin yesterday of advancing a Republican proposal to block public benefits for illegal immigrants, a reversal from last year when opponents easily torpedoed the measure.- tick tock, tick tock********
