I don't love the pursuit of money by any means... but I accept the fact that I won't survive w/out it.

    'We've all freelanced...'...

... if so - why aren't you still doing it? (I believe Tommy asked that earlier). Why the hell would you work for someone else if you didn't have to?

I'm thinking the answer is that it's really not as easy to work for one's self as some of you appear to indicate.

Call me high and mighty all you want... that still doesn't shift the fact that a lot of you talked some serious shit earlier about ROMNEY busting up all those companies just to turn a dime for himself... which is why I began talking about 'understanding business' in the first place and the reason we're even discussing 'freelancing'...

... ah shit... sorry... didn't mean to go back on topic. ;)

    • I simply got tired of feeling like I was always working and When I wasn't feeling like I should be.DrBombay
    • I can appreciate that I guess... and thanks for answering that. It's definitely not for everyone.PonyBoy
    • It can be fun, but running a freelance design practice actually isn't a very efficient way to make monies if you think about itukit
    • about it. Much better to set up a continuous source of income than work job by job.ukit
    • I thought about it and I think you're wrong.mathinc
    • I'm talking about business models in general, not freelance vs fulltime. Services based business model is never going to be as easy to rake in the cash, common sense.ukit
    • going to be as easy a way to make money if you want to really rake in the cash. Who's able to scale up their business easier, the guy designing websites one by one or the guy selling T shirts on E Bay?ukit
    • up faster, the guy meticulously designing websites one by one or the guy selling something off an automated site?ukit
    • Ukit is right, we can only sell so much of our time. Also, administrative activities take a lot of the freelancers time.Josev
    • Some form of passive income would be better.Josev
    • Btw, I still think Romney is a sleaze bag. I've been freelancing for 17 years, that must make me more right than Pony.Josev
    • than Pony.Josev

you freelancing, sitting in your underwear, smoking pot while repeats of judge judy is on the tele has nothing to do with business. You are surviving, that's it.

salaried jobs are stable and predictable, plus not having to pay 33% on taxes is pretty nice, too. not to mention other benefits that range from jb to job like retirement accts, 401k matching, flex hours, etc.. and with that stability it is easy to pick and choose freelance opportunities to pile on the net worth.. and not have to pick up any shit work that is available when times are lean.

    • I am salaried too. I work on projects, the way you guys were talking is like we all punch clocks like Barney Rubble. When you are salaried it is easier to just stop working for a bit when you want, and then work late when it is necessary.DrBombay
    • When you are salaried it is easier to just stop working for a bit when you want, and then work late when it is necessary.DrBombay
    • Many times I am waiting for content so I can do my thing. I rarely use any design software anymore.DrBombay
    • +2,200 for mixing in a Barney RubbleBonSeff
  • ukit0

HAHAHA cmon, you're claiming total dominance on this issue without any of us really knowing shit about who's making what. I mean, like I said, congrats on the $2,200 in one day, is that a typical day for you, if so you're bringing $500k a year, and my hat goes off to you, and you should just fucking retire and play the stock market in a couple years. Or buy a marijuana farm or something.

It seems to me though that if you plug away at it for 6 years and keep building clients of course you'll build up a nice income, the first few months are the toughest in my experience.

    • :D ahaha... not claiming any sort of 'dominance' more than I am pushing buttons...PonyBoy
    • ... as for the 2200... it was mentioned in a 'note' and in response to me being a pothead in his undies. :)PonyBoy
    • How much bud can you get for two grand anyway?ukit
    • depends on the quality of the bud :)
      ounces vs. pounds

    • if you've got a cock between your legs, don't ever, ever use the word "undies" again. got it?mg33

every single person i know who freelances full time carries way more stress than the ones that don't. without exception. if you want and pride yourself in being a one man show, more power to ya.

    • <<<<<<<<<<<<<quack
    • I agree with you there.. clocking out must be a nice thing. :Pmathinc
    • it's definitely a trade off... as tommy pointed out belowPonyBoy
    • I should get one of these for my home office, just to make it official. http://i77.photobuck…mathinc
    • At least it would make it feel more official when I stopped working for the night.mathinc
    • see that's the difference, i stop working for the day.BonSeff

I think we were all kind of taking the piss about this. There are pros and cons to paid fulltime and freelance. I've done both and I do prefer freelance, mainly because I like to take naps every day.. and I need flexibility in my schedule for backpacking trips etc. The security of paid fulltime is really nice though. I'd probably do it if I found a studio I liked.

I am kind of amazed at how much time some of you spend on here while working, and I think that's where this argument got a little skewed, but whatever, each to their own.

    • i have the feeling you are easily amazed.. but whatever, to each their ownBonSeff
    • So you take naps all day and want to lecture us about spending time on here?;Dukit
    • I take a nap every day, and I work on my own time.. that's the difference. No one is paying me to play with you fuckers. ;Dmathinc
    • You don't understand being salaried. We don't punch clocks.DrBombay
    • Little brain, where did I say all you guys did was punch clocks?mathinc
    • I've been salaried.mathinc
    • I've worked for myself.mathinc
    • I know what it is to do/be either.mathinc
    • Stop being such a nitpicky little bitch.DrBombay
    • Stop lying about nitpicky shit then. That way I won't have to keep correcting you.mathinc
    • Not sure what I lied about...DrBombay

This explains a lot on your views on taxes, every freelancers/contractor I know cries the blues about taxes more than fulltime employees I know. They seem to feel they pay more than anyone else because they have to cut a check. Most of them I know also never have their full payment and defer payment a lot then blame the gov because they didn't save enough for taxes.

    • my problem with taxes is not the fact i have to pay them... it's the where the money goes once i've paid inPonyBoy
    • I've been there.DrBombay
    • i have no problem with taxes and I see the need for many reasons... but there are things I feel aren't my responsibility...PonyBoy
    • (nor your responsibility) to pay for... yet money flows to it (this includes shitty wars)PonyBoy
    • Everyone can say that about taxes.DrBombay
    • well then I would agree with everybody!!PonyBoy
    • Crack dealers and pimps agree with this.PonyBoy
    • Move to a state with no income tax like here.ukit
  • ukit0

I don't think anyone really cares about any of this, I just thought it was worth bringing up to get past this idea that being good at business has anything to do with liberal or conservative. I mean, for every Rupert Murdoch you can point to a Warren Buffet or George Soros. A surprising number of Wall Street guys too. If you want to talk about making money by brutally sinking your opposition at any cost, just grab any one of the Democrats from Goldman Sachs, they make Romney look like childs play. Hell, I'd even bet a majority of Silicon Valley entrepeneurs fall on the liberal side of the scale on most issues, and they've done more than anyone over the past decade when you talk about business innovation.

    • Anyways...Romney's probably a bright guy. His gay-loving past combined with Mormonism is a steep hill to climb though.ukit
    • yay actual non partisan discussion. ill chime in that doing your own thing is harder and im lazy. so i choose to write off 40 hours of the week for security
      ********
    • write off 38.5 hours a week for security. of course i consider myself freelance fulltime. like most salaried jobs
      ********
    • and yet there is still a aprt of me hoping that i get pushed harder and fired so i can do better. probably why i come in late everyday

Oakland business owner Richard Lee's initiative to fully legalize pot is "virtually certain" to make it on the ballot this fall after gathering over 400,000 signatures.

The 10-page California initiative would allow anyone 21 or older to possess, share and transport up to an ounce for personal use and to grow up to 25 square feet per residence or parcel. It would allow local governments, but not the state, to authorize the cultivation, transportation and sale of marijuana and to impose taxes to raise revenues.

Lee has spent at least $1.3 million, mostly on a professional signature-gathering effort, and has assembled a team of experienced campaign consultants that include veterans of the Clinton White House.

    • 21? what the fuck is this shit? baby steps I know but I think it's downright stupidismith
    • Sorry, I know I'd still vote for it if I was in CA. Still, this, alcohol, whatever. Shouldn't be 21.ismith
    • Cmon man, it lets you grow your own pot FFS. Also there's a funny bit in there that talks about how employers will be barred from firing employees if they find out you are smoking weed.ukit

Teabaggin' Born Again Christian Right Wing Nuts!

A tea party participant published what he thought was Rep. Thomas Perriello’s home address and urged disgruntled voters to “drop by” for a “good face-to-face chat.”

Reps. Louise Slaughter and Bart Stupak have received death threats.

In Health Bill, Obama Attacks Wealth Inequality
    By David Leonhardt

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/2…

"For all the political and economic uncertainties about health reform, at least one thing seems clear: The bill that President Obama signed on Tuesday is the federal government’s biggest attack on economic inequality since inequality began rising more than three decades ago."

"Over most of that period, government policy and market forces have been moving in the same direction, both increasing inequality. The pretax incomes of the wealthy have soared since the late 1970s, while their tax rates have fallen more than rates for the middle class and poor."

"Nearly every major aspect of the health bill pushes in the other direction."

  • luckyorphan0

Just had to post this line from the article above:

"The bill is the most sweeping piece of federal legislation since Medicare was passed in 1965. It aims to smooth out one of the roughest edges in American society — the inability of many people to afford medical care after they lose a job or get sick. And it would do so in large measure by taxing the rich."

  • luckyorphan0

    More stats for your consideration:

Since 1980, median real household income has risen less than 15 percent. The only period of strong middle-class income growth during this time came in the mid- and late 1990s, which by coincidence was also the one time when taxes on the affluent were rising.

    • Those two sentences should make us all re-evaluate our stance on taxing the wealthy.luckyorphan

    One last article:

    GOP whine: Drink deeply
    by Gene Lyons

"Finally, conservative thinkers such as David Frum and Bruce Bartlett have begun warning that Republicans are foolish to make themselves captive to the "hysterical accusations and pseudo-information" of the party's entertainment and tea party wing. "Talk radio," the former Bush speechwriter argues on his FrumForum blog, "thrives on confrontation and recrimination" rather than governing."

"Bartlett cites a survey of tea partiers at a recent Washington demonstration that shows most know nothing about the policies they so noisily abhor. Almost none realize, for example, that Obama's jobs stimulus plan gave "90 percent of all taxpayers ... a tax cut last year and almost 100 percent of those in the $50,000 income range." When people resort to racial epithets and sexual insults, it's normally a sign they've got nothing else to say."

Healthy tax increases, not only on wealthy

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/n…
The historic overhaul of the nation's health care system that President Obama signed Tuesday, when combined with the fixes making their way through Congress, will raise taxes over the next 10 years by more than a half-trillion dollars.
