GetRefresh, it was nice having you here, don't come back

I'm not going to waste my breath arguing. I suggest you actually read the DHS report in question before you start with your rhetoric that it's "targeting verterans" specifically.

    http://www.fas.org/irp/eprint/ri…

After reading it, if you think it presents illegitimate or unwarranted, unsubstantiated points, I'd like to hear it.

  • ukit0

The point about the memo was that it was just a memo - the DHS releases hundreds of them a year. The things who mentioned that Bush did, which I am also against, are actual policy changes.

Clearly the DHS has the responsibility to release memos so that there is some awareness of what kind of threats there are out there. It can't be so neutral and PC that it never delves into which organizations might be potentially committing violent acts, or what kinds of ideologies might motivate violence. I mean, what do you think the people at the DHS and the FBI do all day?

    • I agree with what your sentiment here. I think we only disagree on what the document actually says.designbot
    • *I agree with your sentiment here.

All I can do is LOL at much of this TBO.

    How about this
"Proposed imposition of firearms restrictions and weapons bans
likely would attract new members into the ranks of rightwing extremist groups, as well as potentially spur some of them to begin planning and training for violence against the government. The high volume of purchases and stockpiling of weapons and ammunition by rightwing extremists in anticipation of restrictions and bans in some parts of the country continue to be a primary
    concern to law enforcement."

"Rightwing extremist chatter on the Internet continues to focus on the economy, the perceived loss of U.S. jobs in the manufacturing and construction sectors, and home foreclosures. Anti-Semitic extremists attribute these losses to a deliberate conspiracy conducted by a cabal of Jewish “financial elites.” These “accusatory” tactics are employed to draw new recruits into rightwing extremist groups and further radicalize those already subscribing to extremist beliefs. DHS/I&A assesses this trend is likely to accelerate if the economy is perceived to worsen."

I mean if this isn't propaganda, I don't know what is. This is all paranoid speculation. The worst part is I don't see anywhere where the word "rightwing extremist" is actually clearly defined.

"Rightwing extremist chatter on the Internet continues" huh? Are they actually using things people say online as evidence of the rise of extremists? WOW.

    Disgruntled Military Veterans

(U//FOUO) DHS/I&A assesses that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat. These skills and knowledge have the potential to boost the capabilities of extremists—including lone wolves or small terrorist cells—to carry out violence. The willingness of a small percentage of military personnel to join extremist groups during the 1990s because they were disgruntled, disillusioned, or suffering from
the psychological effects of war is being replicated today.

This part might as well read "disgruntled Mexicans" or "disgruntled Jews" because it is basically telling authorities to give special attention to this group of people (vets).

    • Why do disgruntled mexicans have combat experience? Have they tried blowing up federal buildings i n Oklahoma?TheBlueOne
    • Doesn't matter.
      What if they had?

whatever dude - have you ever listened to Alex Jones or Hal Turner or another of those paranoid types?

The description above just sounds like a transcript of one of the shows.

  • ukit0

Anti-Semitic extremists attribute these losses to a deliberate conspiracy conducted by a cabal of Jewish “financial elites.”

    • and how many people are actually part of these groups, 10? :)designbot
  • ukit0

Are you kidding? Just look at the popularity of online movies like "Zeitgeist" which basically alleges the same thing.

Now granted, believing that the world is controlled by evil Jewish bankers doesn't necessarily make you violence prone, but it's a fairly common view out there.

    • I know lots of paranoid people, none of them are violent. I don't see the connection.designbot
  • designbot0

    What about this?

"Many rightwing extremist groups perceive recent gun control legislation as a threat to their right to bear arms and in response have increased weapons and ammunition stockpiling, as well as renewed participation in paramilitary training exercises. Such
activity, combined with a heightened level of extremist paranoia, has the potential to facilitate criminal activity and violence."

"rightwing extremist groups perceive recent gun control legislation as a threat to their right to bear arms" well duh! This wording is actually quite scary as it takes buying weapons and ammo and links these actions to "rightwing extremist" What about the people that are simply afraid it will be harder to get a gun in the future, or fear that their right to bear arms will be hindered by Obama? Can you not see the propaganda and fear tactics here?

  • ukit0

haha...well i think it's the second part of the sentence that is more key here.

"...and in response have increased weapons and ammunition stockpiling, as well as renewed participation in paramilitary training exercises."

    • dude you know some of this is jacked up, reminds me of something Bush would do honestly.designbot
  • fooler20

"What about the people that are simply afraid it will be harder to get a gun in the future"
It should be. When's the last time you heard a gun was used for a good cause?

    • No it shouldn't be. And to answer your question...the other night on the news. A senior citizen protected his home by shooting a burglar.designbot

    • either. We lived there over a year without any mishaps which I am thankful for. I would always see homeless people roaming my area though.designbot

    • everyone has this romantic view of what they would do if their family was threatened, its mostly bullshit.DrBombay
    • I wouldn't have pulled a gun either. You made a smart decision to give them the money. But what if it wasn't over money, but you had to protect someone you loved from getting raped or something similar?designbot

I think this is a pretty important statement.

"Such activity, combined with a heightened level of extremist paranoia, has the potential to facilitate criminal activity and violence."

To me this implies a combination of factors which lead to a potential threat. Not just a singular action such as the stock-piling of weapons.

The biggest issue I took was with the label 'right-wing' extremists. Regardless of whether these white supremacy groups lean more towards the right end of the spectrum, the label of 'right-wing' just politicizes a real and potential threat making it seem unrealistic and farfetched.

    • agreeddesignbot
    • left wing extremists would hug you to death though. Important distinction.DrBombay
    • What about the protests Dr.b? They frequently seem to escalate to violence.designbot

I've been robbed twice at gunpoint, these resulted in me acquiring gun training. i'd like to see them pull that shit again. ;)

i was robbed at gunpoint once.

he pulled a gun on me and said "gimmie all your money motherf*cker" and i was kinda drunk and said "that's not a gun, these are guns" and i held my arms up and flexed doing a front double bicep. the robber stopped for a moment and tilted his head back to laugh. at that moment i grabbed his neck and tore it out killing him almost instantly. then i dragged his lifeless body into the lake and threw him in the direction of Wesley's house and yelled "WESLEY..... WEEEEEEESSSSSLLLLLLEEEEEYYYYYYYY... as the barn burned in the background.

back in january i decided something.

3 things i'd try an never talk about.

    politics
    religion
    mac vs. pc

i've broken the rule a time or two but really, what a waste of time. no matter what either side says, democrat to republican, believer to non-believer, mac user to pc user, no one will EVER change their opinion on the subject. ever. the conversations always start off innocent enough but they always turn into a slug match. 20 minutes later what was accomplished? nothing.

i'm just lurking while drinking. or vice versa. 7616 posts later and it's the same as 6 posts in. how many years this been going on? years. think about it. yeeeeeaaaarrrrs. for what?

haha. i can't help but laugh.

I met this bartender a few weeks ago and I told him he looked just like Gleen Beck. He was kind of offended and it ended up being one of our cities more famous drag queens, Lotta Liquor.

not sure if you can see the similarities but when he/she's not all dolled up he looks just like him!
