"the RNC meets in an extraordinary special session next week, it will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the “Democrat Socialist Party."
- I think they need to rebrand themselves first.TheBlueOne

A great conservative critique of how the Republican party went off the rails, written by the first Federal judge appointee of Ronald Reagan:
http://www.becker-posner-blog.co…
His main point, among many, is how the Republican party, starting after the Clinton years embraced religious tests and an overall anti-intellectual, anti-reason stance in it's general policies. And in doing so has driven all the rational, actual policy makers from the party. A fair and spot on critique I'd say.
The BEST (brilliant) part though is reading the comments though, mostly left by Republicans/conservatives calling the guy a dumbshit, "not a real conservative" and then it devolves into comment after comment arguing about how old the earth is and how global warming is not possibly man made phenomenon and a just a giant plot by Al Gore and the "dim-o-crats".
Point proven, Judge Posner. I feel sorry for you guys.

in all honesty what do you all think is really going to happen to the Repubs, they will not go away on 8 bad years , I really hate this bickering BS, this is what turns me off from following politics as much as I'd like ,
hate them or love them , I do not see this as progress to eliminate the monopolized 2 party system ;
crap like this
" "the RNC meets in an extraordinary special session next week, it will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the “Democrat Socialist Party.""
just means they are positioning , looking for angles , sure it is a horrible tactic, but what are you foreseeing , Repubs go away and we end up with a one party system , that would be a nightmare

I think Dems should call a meeting to officially rebrand the Republicans as the "National Socialist" party.

"Obama administration threatens Britain to keep torture evidence concealed"
http://www.salon.com/opinion/gre…
"
The United States Government's position is that, if the redacted paragraphs are made public, then the United States will re-evaluate its intelligence-sharing relationship with the United Kingdom with the real risk that it would reduce the intelligence it provided (para. 62) . . . . [and] there is a real risk, if we restored the redacted paragraphs, the United States Government, by its review of the shared intelligence arrangements, could inflict on the citizens of the United Kingdom a very considerable increase in the dangers they face at a time when a serious terrorist threat still pertains (para. 106).
Just think how despicable that threat is: if your court describes the torture to which one of your residents was subjected while in U.S. custody, we will withhold information from you that could enable you to break up terrorist plots aimed at your citizens."

Sadly I feel the only way Republicans can regain control in the next 5-10 yrs. is if another attack occurs in the U.S. or extremely unsuccessful campaign in Iraq/Afghanistan/Pakistan.
I still feel the reason former VP Dick Cheney has been so vocal in the media lately is to somehow influence the potential jury pool in a criminal investigation. I'm starting to think that another reason is to build a platform for Republicans.
Same arguments seem to be getting brought up against Democrats. Fiscally irresponsible, socially liberal, expanding government powers and weak on national defense. The one which I feel hits the nerve with most of the American public is a weak national defense primarily after 9/11.
A big reason former president Bush won a second term was largely based on the idea that he was doing a good job of keeping everyone safe. This, in my opinion, is the only way they can regain the power they once had. Project the idea that only the Republican's are willing and capable of defending America at any cost.
Again, my opinion. I could be way off...

Republicans explain the socialist thing...
“Just as President Reagan’s identification of the Soviet Union as the ‘evil empire’ galvanized opposition to communism, we hope that the accurate depiction of the Democrats as a Socialist Party will galvanize opposition to their march to socialism.”

Interesting article...
http://www.monthlyreview.org/598…
I have now reached the point where I may indicate briefly what to me constitutes the essence of the crisis of our time. It concerns the relationship of the individual to society.
The individual has become more conscious than ever of his dependence upon society. But he does not experience this dependence as a positive asset, as an organic tie, as a protective force, but rather as a threat to his natural rights, or even to his economic existence.
Moreover, his position in society is such that the egotistical drives of his make-up are constantly being accentuated, while his social drives, which are by nature weaker, progressively deteriorate.
The economic anarchy of capitalist society as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of the evil. Private capital tends to become concentrated in few hands, partly because of competition among the capitalists, and partly because technological development and the increasing division of labor encourage the formation of larger units of production at the expense of smaller ones.
The result of these developments is an oligarchy of private capital the enormous power of which cannot be effectively checked even by a democratically organized political society. This is true since the members of legislative bodies are selected by political parties, largely financed or otherwise influenced by private capitalists who, for all practical purposes, separate the electorate from the legislature.
The consequence is that the representatives of the people do not in fact sufficiently protect the interests of the underprivileged sections of the population. Moreover, under existing conditions, private capitalists inevitably control, directly or indirectly, the main sources of information (press, radio, education). It is thus extremely difficult, and indeed in most cases quite impossible, for the individual citizen to come to objective conclusions and to make intelligent use of his political rights.
This crippling of individuals I consider the worst evil of capitalism.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals....

"Marking its first major effort to overhaul financial regulation, the Obama administration will seek new authority to supervise the virtually unregulated complex financial instruments, known as derivatives, that were a major cause of the market crisis, Congressional aides and others who have been briefed on the decision said Wednesday.
The administration will ask Congress to approve legislation that would impose a new government oversight structure for the instruments, which Warren Buffett once called “weapons of mass destruction.”
In a two-page letter to Congressional leaders, Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner asked for the swift approval of a measure that would require many kinds of derivative instruments, including credit default swaps, to be traded on exchanges and subject to tighter regulation. Derivatives can take many forms, but in total there are trillions of dollars’ worth exchanging hands every day around the globe.
The letter asked the lawmakers to give regulators the authority to impose new capital and business conduct requirements on the large Wall Street companies that issue the financial instruments. Capital requirements would, for example, require companies that issue derivatives to hold capital in reserve in case of a default, much the way banks must hold reserves when they make loans."
