Sadly I feel the only way Republicans can regain control in the next 5-10 yrs. is if another attack occurs in the U.S. or extremely unsuccessful campaign in Iraq/Afghanistan/Pakistan.
I still feel the reason former VP Dick Cheney has been so vocal in the media lately is to somehow influence the potential jury pool in a criminal investigation. I'm starting to think that another reason is to build a platform for Republicans.
Same arguments seem to be getting brought up against Democrats. Fiscally irresponsible, socially liberal, expanding government powers and weak on national defense. The one which I feel hits the nerve with most of the American public is a weak national defense primarily after 9/11.
A big reason former president Bush won a second term was largely based on the idea that he was doing a good job of keeping everyone safe. This, in my opinion, is the only way they can regain the power they once had. Project the idea that only the Republican's are willing and capable of defending America at any cost.
Again, my opinion. I could be way off...
