"The church runs a number of ministries providing help to poor neighborhoods, care for children in need, and general community services. But Pastor Kalnins has also preached that critics of President Bush will be banished to hell; questioned whether people who voted for Sen. John Kerry in 2004 would be accepted to heaven; charged that the 9/11 terrorist attacks and war in Iraq were part of a war "contending for your faith;" and said that Jesus "operated from that position of war mode."
Someone yesterday said we were trying to cram her into a religious whacko compartment, I think she's pretty much there on her own, after reading this...

Not to mention, it constitutes a serious misunderstanding of sin.
- it must be horrible for you to be lumped in with such peoplemagnificent_ruin
- Show me a Christian leader that doesn't interpret current events through the filter of biblical eschatology.Mimio
- depends on the editioncapsize

Good for you Gramme, but you must realize that many people in US hear and believe interpretations like this every Sunday.
- Not really. The rule, not the exception, is to keep politics off of the pulpit.blaw
- You're kidding right?Mimio
- What do you think happens inside those walls on Sunday? See for yourself. It's hardly a secret society.blaw
- I have seen &and heard it for years first hand.Mimio
- Then you're hitting the exception. I've been to a pile of churches from birth and the only politics I've heard was ...blaw
- backlash at then Gov. Ventura calling Christianity "a crutch for the weak minded."blaw
- And once, as a local anti-gay rights moving was gaining steam I heard a sermon that stated, and I'm paraphrasing...blaw
- "Jesus said it's none of your fucking business." Neither instance ruffled my feathers.blaw
- Er... to be clear, it was in defense of gay rights, not against.blaw
- Ever listen to Christian radio?Mimio

My pastor has strong opinions about certain issues that are dealt with in government, such as abortion and gay rights. He would unfortunately disagree with blaw's pastor—the Bible has a pretty clear stance on homosexuality, and Jesus never said anything that could possibly be construed as "it's none of your f—ing business" on that front. Sin is sin, whether the partner is a man or a woman, he would say.
Nevertheless: my pastor never, EVER endorses a politician from the pulpit, nor would he ever believe or tell someone that their salvation hinges on how they talk about G-Dubs.
- ...He would also say in the same breath that we are all in the same boat in terms of innate corruption—thus, it's wrong to ostracize gay people.gramme
- thus, it's wrong to ostracize gay people.gramme
- recognition of one's sin is not a prerequisite for friendship with a Christian, in other words...gramme
- at least it shouldn't be.gramme
- Jesus said lots of things that can be construed as "it's none of your fucking business." 'Cept with a cleaner tongue.blaw
- Worth noting, pastors are just men. Same as me.blaw
- A good al dente pasta though, now that's a different matter entirely.SkyPoo

Just so I can be clear, I have TONS of Christian friends, and grew up in the church, so I am NOT lumping everyone in with this, but these guys sound like a special breed of "twist and align the bible with our political needs" to me...

I'm sorry, but homosexuality is not a sin, and there is no man-made 1600 year-old book that will convince me otherwise. I'm so sick of this argument against gays: "Oh we know they are sinners in the eyes of God, but we'll love them anyway." This is textbook "fear of other" under the guise of charitable compassion.
- Not directed to anyone in particular. Just soap-boxing.duckofrubber

Interesting a few weeks back this pastors sermons were all online..now they're gone...*poof*
- teleos0
I've been in countless Christian churches over the past 20 years and never heard a minister or teacher say anything like what is being claimed here. That's just rotten theology and it would get the promulgator disfellowshipped from a mainstream denomination.
- teleos0
Slightly more disconcerting than preachers like this is the vociferous and intolerant railing against Christians [and theism in general] which has become so fashionable as of late.
- Out with the old...duckofrubber

teleos, you keep saying "Gee I've never heard stuff like this..must be an abberation..an outlayer that you guys pick up on..."
Yet all the people that pursue and gain political power and status come from these churches..yet to you "They don't exist anywhere".
Sure. Right. Your a mouthpiece, face it.
- never said "they don't exist anywhere". Don't stoop to outright lying (again).teleos

Whatever helps you sleep at night, blueOne. Obama's pastor and this woman's pastor. You demonstrate again that your fallacy of choice is:

- one would hope a battle against self delusion would result in objectivity and an understanding...teleos

duckofrubber: like it or not, it's there in the Bible, in more than one place. If you don't agree with the Biblical view of these things that's fine, but you should know that the Scriptures do not mince words on the subject of homosexuality. There is really no room at all for ambiguity on the subject, in spite of blaw's incorrect paraphrase of Jesus.
1 Corinthians 6:8-10
"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God."1 Timothy 1:9-11
"...the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted."Again, these are words directly taken from the Bible, not me or my pastor.

furthermore duck_, we are all sinners and have fallen short of the glory of God. Gay people are not any worse than I am. We're all in the same pickle, so to speak. Calling something sin that the Bible calls sin is not casting stones anymore than when I tell Rybo he might want to check his attitude when asking for a crit. It's just that homosexuality is a sensitive subject. Most people don't think very clearly on the matter, but are rather governed by popular opinion. Which is especially ironic to me in a profession full of self-professed free-thinkers.
- don't underestimate the level of conformity here. Everybody has a faith-based worldview.teleos
- even hipster designers.teleos
- Worth noting, I said the pastor came out with a "love thy neighbor" sermon, you said, "homosexuality is a sin."blaw
- Sensitive subject, indeed.blaw
- I haven't seen anything in your posts about a "love thy neighbor" sermon.gramme
- and I don't think confronting sin in a gracious way is incompatible with loving my neighbor.gramme
- If I were speaking specifically to a gay person in this thread, I would take a different tack...but we're discussing ideals heregramme
- gramme0
thankfully, there is grace, and that in infinite measure.

are you guys the kind of parents who say to their lesbian daughters, "I love you, but you're going to hell?"
- magnificent_ruin0
I'd like a serious answer
- duckofrubber0
Gramme: I remain unconvinced. I will repeat, once again, the fallacy of unbridled adherence to what is written in a 1600 year-old man-made book. Of course, you will counter with the argument of belief through faith, but I will continue to assert a big fat BULLOCKS to that.
- do some homework. There are scores of good empirical reasons to believe the authority and authenticity of it.teleos
- it is faith based on evidence.teleos
- Thanks, but I did the homework. Logic and common sense win the day here.duckofrubber
