I came into the design world trought digital, when I start I was the "computer guy" who could make all the stuff in digital, and I started already late. The only issue here is, either you have the ability to learn from the younger...

so, i'm sure you had a huge head about something when you were 16. yea, his work sucks but everyone starts somewhere. if you really think he's your stiff competition, you probably suck too.
design needs to listen to this simple graffiti rule: "You suck until further notice."

How about this, after 2012 when Earth's polar magnetic fields shift and all computers stop working, who's gonna be the guys to create art by hand? Who's gonna be designing stand up against new world order posters? Who's gonna stamp the V of victory in blood on murals? We are "the ones" screw 16-year-olds then!
- damn your right, and i can't draw to save my life......Llantera

Senior Graphic Designer lol
At least be a creative director or Project Manager by then- project manager?! oh yes, that's something to aspire too.monkeyshine
- why would anyone want to manage projects?********

I'm not sure why everyones freaked the fuck out at being a graphic designer in their 40s. Is it because you'll be working alongside people you'll be old enough to be a dad? In 10 years if I'm still designing websites I don't think I'll care that much. A paycheck is a paycheck.

I think the field will continue to mature as the designers mature. You might not want to be doing what NoPattern does when you are 50, but what about what Jesse James Garrett does? Also it sounds cliche, the state of the art will progress dramatically over the course of our careers. What we are using today will be as outdated as dial up modems by the time we are older. To me that keeps it interesting.

I'm 45 and nothing changes. It's still great and it still sucks for all the same reasons. Flash still won't clear my interval even though they overhaul action script just to try to make us all obsolete. Did I get off topic? back to work.

This is like saying "why are there no 45 year old receptionists?" Because hopefully by that time you've moved into something that pays better. To everyone in the office who's not creative, "Graphic Designer" means "Photoshop Guy". My buddy owns a shop and changed his title to "VP of Creative Technology" after he got a card from one of the senior guys at Chiat Day. He jokinly told me "It means whatever it needs to mean to make you to feel better about you giving me your project". I like titles either VP or Director in them only because non-creative people take them seriously. And really, does the title "Graphic Designer" mean anything? My experience was it that meant no one wanted to trust me with high level creative decisions.
- heres the thing: were talking about doing graphic design, not what you are called.********

I'm turning 30 this year and don't see myself doing this forever. I started in some shite jobs but have always grown into better and better. I can only assume the better the better the opportunities get, and eventually I see myself progressing out of design and more into marketing, writing, or (ugh) management. Different and interesting situations is what it's about for me, of course more reward too.

So there's an age limit to creativity???
I am 49 and still working as designer.
- scrap_paper0
I don't think graphic design is necessarily a young persons profession at all. In fact I'm sure there are a number of creatives out there that enjoy a professional renaissance of sorts as they proceed through the years.

I think the whole agism thing is bullshit. I think if there is shame surrounding a 40 year old veteran who still is doing graphic design, it should be the company's shame, not the designer's. I'd love to be solving problems with creativity until I'm an old fart.

wow DCDesigns is the oldest guy here. I kid DC YTM™ Yup Creativity has no age limit, as DC has just commented to me here at our work Frank Loyd Wright worked until his 80's, Saul Bass worked and created into his elder age, alot of prominent figures in the design world that we either look up to from knowing from an educational standpoint or just being in this crazy business are mostly older than us........unless their name is Hedge and make tons of money then they dont need to be creative at all.

it seems to me that your are either passionate about design or your not. if your not then of course you'll move into something else and there's nothing wrong with that. but if design is what moves you then age doesn't matter. ideas are ideas, styles and technology come and go.
- MLP0
all this shouldn't matter as long as you stay up on what's going on. i think too many people in the profession don't do this and retreat up to the corner office and don't keep their eyes on the big picture.

best quote I read recently. Some rich dude from Forbes said, "you need to reinvent yourself every 10 years"... damn i think about that alot, been design 10+years and ready to move on.
