I need to buy a new laptop for doing freelance design work. What non-apple laptops are being used out there for serious design work?

my dell has worked great - latitude 810 i think
my mac book pro should arrive today- LOL. Even when they work great you still get an Apple. It's OK I'm the same.Haydesign

Sony do well-made machines. They're in, essentially, the same price/performance bracket as Apple, and they last a long time.
imho, I couldn't imagine doing design work on a laptop - I'd need a separate mouse, keyboard and monitor anyway, so what's the point.
I know you don't care about my opinion, but I'm just that kinda guy.

It's all down to spec (obviously)
CPU: These days, you want at least a dual core 64-bit processor (cs4 will be 64-bit, possibly utilising multiple cores (finally!)), 2.6-3GHz.
HDD: Whatever you need. Personally, I think it's better to have a small drive for working files - because it forces you to backup often. Imagine not backing up 300GB of work, then losing it. Not as bad as losing 5gb.
Extra features: bluetooth + wifi are pretty much standrad these days - think whether you want or need firewire 800, bluray, built-in SD etc
Think about the company and support options, research their reputation, and the model you go for.
I'd probably look at a high-end dell workstation. My uncle had a pretty nice one with dual core.
Oh, don't get vista.

The best you can afford.

Macs look better at client meetings, and when trying to impress your friends. Makes you look more important than using a 'conformist' PC. *cough*
Just get what you want. The best you can afford. It'll all run the software you want..

I just picked up a Dell XPS and really like it. Light as a feather, runs CS3 not sweat.
I don't get why people hate Vista so much. I have it on both my desktop and laptop and like it just fine.
