Toshiba makes some really nice laptops. Like others have said go with the highest specs you can afford. BE SURE AND GET A DEDICATED VIDEO CARD, it will cost more but is well worth it. Also if you get a laptop with Vista make sure you get at lest 2GB of RAM. Go with a dual core Intel, opposed to AMD, as they use less power and are faster.
Truth is you can spend less, and get something that will smoke a MacBook Slow.

I realize that looks are not the only deciding factor, but I have yet to see an elegant, sleek, well put together non-Apple laptop.
Most PC laptops just look so cheap, like they attempted to be teched out but it just looks dated. I work on a Dell Latitude D610 at work - it gets the job done bit it just looks clumsy.
I've always been so surprised at how far off any PC laptops have been in comparison to Mac laptops in the form and function department. Are there no good product and industrial design people out there that can work with a PC laptop maker and design something elegant, and not something that looks at home in a teenagers bedroom, or on a spaceship?

Plus it was free from my work, haha.

I have one of these. Pretty nice. Not as crispy as my MacBook pro was and definitely nowhere near my MacPro, but it's a solid machine.

This got ridiculed on the page before, but seriously, check it out:
"Lenovo has released the ThinkPad W700 laptop aimed at photographers and designers, offering a built-in graphics tablet and color calibrator. What’s more, the display displays 72% of the possible color gamut of the Adobe RGB color space whereas most normal laptop displays can only show 45% (though new panel technologies becoming available allow up to 100% coverage).
This 17-inch widescreen mobile workstation is bundled with the new Nvidia Quadro FX 2700M and 3700M Open GL graphics processors with up to 1GB of video memory. It also features up to 8GB of high speed DDR3 memory, optional dual hard drives with RAID configurations, a 7-in-1 built-in card reader, a range of wireless connectivity options and multimedia capabilities including an optional Blu-ray DVD burner/player."
PLUS a built in Wacom tablet...

although i will say - i much prefer OS X to Windows, but all the audio software i love generally runs win-only. drivers tend to be better / more widespread for winxp as well. sucky :/....
i say this as i'm shopping for a live performance machine :p
