Oh yeah, I forgot, George Bush Senior gave us the nickname Little Beirut because of how much love we show him and his retarded son when they visit.
- That sounds like a compliment.********
- Not this time around. It's all about Obama. Peace!!!!!!!elektromuzak

higglesbee, i don't want to come off as a pessimist. there are a lot of great things about portland, and i'm sure as a newcomer you'd appreciate it more than most folks that have lived here their whole lives (like me). everyone will certainly highlight all the awesome things, so i see it as my job to bring up my own concerns about the city. fugged seems to disagree with my view on racial segregation, and as much as i love living here and wish it weren't the case, this is how it is. arthur is right though, portland is a very, very white city so obviously diversity isn't something this city would advertise. but the minority do tend to segregate themselves by choice into various areas like i mentioned before. i think once you move here and have gone to various parts of portland, you'll see what i mean. Here's a test when you get here: go to Pioneer Square (shopping center downtown) and look at the people. Mostly all white. Then go into the Lloyd Center in the NE. A majority of the people shopping are black. That's just one example I'm talking about. And if you go into Beaverton/Hillsboro, you'll start seeing a lot more asian markets and asian people. That's why Uwajimaya is in Beaverton and not in the NE, or SW. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of things about pdx. This is just my observation.
- Sounds about right to me. Uwajimaya is awesome.arthur
- elektromuzak, thanks for your honesty man. I love it.Higglesbee

well, technically uwajimaya is in the sw... but i mean not in sw as in sw downtown area

oh, check out Willamette Week's kvetchfest... like a pdx rant. pretty funny stuff: http://wweek.com/editorial/3422/…

Actually elektromuzak, what I disagree with is what you said about the NE. A lot of the NE is still very much white. I could drop some census numbers, but there's really no point.
If anyone is curious about Portland from a housing, census, crime, zoning, blah blah blah, etc. point of view, there's no better source than www.portlandmaps.com
- Yeah, NE is mostly white (i live here), yet he was right about the Lloyd Center. More diversity in North PDX.arthur

fugged, the heart of the african american community is in the N. Albina district. a lot of their culture resides in that area. the three oldest african american churches are on n. skidmore, ne 8th ave, and n chautauqua blvd. even the african american health coalition is on N. vancouver ave. these are just a few examples of my reasoning that a majority of the african americans reside in the north and northeast part of portland.
and to back that up, here's a short history lesson:
world war II brought an influx of african americans into portland and they worked in shipyards and lived in vanport which was a crappy public housing located between portland and the columbia river. anyway, in 1948 there was this big ass flood and vanport was completely underwater by the end of the day... it's very parallel to hurricane katrina in new orleans. anyway, everyone that lived in vanport became homeless. back then, most of the blacks lived in vanport or other segregated housing districts, and boy people were racist then. i mean, in the 1920's, oregon had one of the largest and most active KKK chapters outside the deep south. i'm digressing here... so the point is, the flood and destruction of vanport led to the large integration of african americans in the N and NE portland area. the racism probably gave the community more reason to move into an area where they are more segregated also.so, screw the census. this is straight up history. google it.

anyway, most people living in portland nowadays don't know much about the city history... most everyone is a transplant from california or wherever...

The Indians are taking over.
- elektromuzak0
technically, there are more white people in the n and ne area in terms of race distribution. i'm just saying that a majority of the black community resides in n and ne. i suppose i should correct myself and say that white people pretty much reside everywhere in portland, and it is the minorities that are segregated in their own areas.

Eh - doesn't really matter. It's a cool place to live regardless :) I've been in the NE for 37 years and will never leave. Just really like the old houses, the tree lined streets and the relaxed attitudes.
Where'd you go to school?
- elektromuzak0
yeah, the NE is a really beautiful area with great houses. i went to PSU for a couple years before dropping out. i learn best on my own i suppose... like robert pirsig of zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance says, education is an orthodox form of mass hypnosis. i guess i believe that real art cannot be taught.

We'll all have to meet up at one of your pizza/beer/movie joints once I relocate. The thought of all three of those together in a public place wets my pant-area.

I live here now!

Oh yeah you're probably all still sleeping.

PDX is such a weird town. Nice there is culture moving in, but still freaking damn weird. Been here over 20 years with expand of Pearl and South Waterfront, there are some nice movements.

I've lived here (PDX) for 10 years now. It is indeed WEIRD! in my 20's I thought dreads, piercings, tattoos, tall bikes, fixies, smoking weed and protests where cool now everyone that moves here is thinks the same. It's like they think they're "thinking different" but in fact they're just as a conformist as the people their rebelling against.
Plus PDX was just voted the 3rd most toxic city in the US. TAKE THAT YOU STINKING HIPPIES!
