What's it like to live there. Cost of living, culture, what are the mountains like there? Pros, cons?

What's the design scene like emotional emu?

W&K is out there...

I'm moving there, leaving tomorrow. It's a great city, but so far, the job search sucks. I keep hearing how hard it is to get gainful employment out there (because of the recession?). We'll see.
- Where in Portland you headed? I can be a resource.arthur
- I actually don't know. I'd like to live downtown or in the Northwest area (Nob Hill?) but I'm open to going wherever the wind blows me.anzelina
- ...wind blows me. Any resources are greatly appreciated!anzelina
- Nob Hill is a nice area, close to shopping, crowded, expensive. I'm in the NE in Laurelhurst. Lemme know when you're here.arthur
- Will do. Thanks!anzelina

awesome.
low cost living, the ocean and that community is really strong and old. mountains are not as big as other places, but tons of skiing and outdoor stuff abounds. plus, it has "the way life should be" going for it...

So, no one works at NIKE I take it.
- defstro0
I work at Nike, which is technically in Beaverton, but live in Portland. It rains a lot and there are a lot of indie hipsters, but there are lots of great places to eat (including vegetarian / vegan options), great beer, and lots of music. Oh, and lots of strip clubs. Public transit is also great at it is allegedly the most bicycle friendly city in the States.

i'm in Portland, what do you want to know?
Nice vibe to the town, I love it here. Mt Hood is 1hr away, Mt Bachelor 3hrs, the coast 1.5hrs. Rivers everywhere, tons of natural beauty, easy to get out of town. Overall, nice real people. I have a 5yr old and it's a great place for kids. Coming from SF and LA, I was a little let down at first by the lack of variety of some things, but it turned out that I just didn't know where to look. Some of the best restaurants I've ever seen. What else?
- How are the real estate prices?********
- They are decent, some of the more affordable in the country for a city this size, at least when I moved here.arthur
- what kind of property are you looking for?arthur
- I own a house 2 miles from downtown and a condo on the coast. Was much more affordable a few years back.arthur
