fugged, the heart of the african american community is in the N. Albina district. a lot of their culture resides in that area. the three oldest african american churches are on n. skidmore, ne 8th ave, and n chautauqua blvd. even the african american health coalition is on N. vancouver ave. these are just a few examples of my reasoning that a majority of the african americans reside in the north and northeast part of portland.
and to back that up, here's a short history lesson:
world war II brought an influx of african americans into portland and they worked in shipyards and lived in vanport which was a crappy public housing located between portland and the columbia river. anyway, in 1948 there was this big ass flood and vanport was completely underwater by the end of the day... it's very parallel to hurricane katrina in new orleans. anyway, everyone that lived in vanport became homeless. back then, most of the blacks lived in vanport or other segregated housing districts, and boy people were racist then. i mean, in the 1920's, oregon had one of the largest and most active KKK chapters outside the deep south. i'm digressing here... so the point is, the flood and destruction of vanport led to the large integration of african americans in the N and NE portland area. the racism probably gave the community more reason to move into an area where they are more segregated also.so, screw the census. this is straight up history. google it.
