Sure a cease and desist letter would have been fine, even charging what the image would have cost would be appropriate too.
Where do they get 7k from, they just decide you owe them 7k as a penalty?
I would get soem legal help and go to court on principle. They will lose more than 7k in the bad publicity this david vs goliath story would create in the press. I wont use them any more retards.

In the letter there was no justification or explanation of why they charge that much.
Newsgroups in the UK (I'm US but not many postings in this country about it) say that they charge 4 times the value for penalty.
On the phone they just act like a collection agency and don't give any info. Just pay up or pay up with 20% discount right now. I tried to negotiate to no avail.
I did the crime and admitted the error - but the sentance is unjust and very bad business.
As designers aren't we always telling clients to build "trust relationships" with their customers and shit. Project the brand feeling that your not totally trying to screw your customers. Or at least kiss them after you fuck them!

Didn't serve me - came in the mail. I almost didn't open it because I thought it was just stock photo junk - until I saw "legal department" on it. And that seemed odd. I don't get mail from legal departments.
According to people I found in searches - it starts with letter and the next one is FedEx'd. Is FedEx the same as being "served"?
