Microsoft didn't come up with it, sure. But what major company isn't out there just buying the things they want to slap their logo on anyway. Those demos we saw were by the people who were hoping to get their idea funded and this one won big.
That said, as with most technology it looks cool and I'm excited to see it implemented but I'll reserve judgement until it impacts my life somehow.

ZOMG, I love the WII!!!
I was playing tennis, bowling, baseball, & golf all weekend!!
When I had to go outside and enjoy the weather, we walked past a ball field where I exclaimed, "Look, we can play... REAL WII BASEBALL LATER!!!"
Which gathered the suspected groans from my entourage, but passer-bys, and people at the field seemed to enjoy immensely, haha.

this has been around for a little while. some cafe tables in tokyo already implement this if i'm not mistaken
- MrD0
sputnik
yes it has been for a while but it was also very well known that MS has been working on it for some time.
i think this first commerical based with distribution not just one offs or experiment.
- -sputnik-0
ah...well, we'll see what the practical implications are. depending on how they implemented the functionality it could be interesting
- MrD0
i think the question would be more how they are going to distribute this to wider audience who doesnt have 10000 dollars to spend on touch screen box

I'm telling you, medical imaging...
- mrdobolina0
Hux said many doctors/surgeons already use tablet pc's for lots of things. Imagine the portability of documents like x-rays, MRI's etc that currently are output on film. You can't zoom in/out on films. no documents to get destroyed, sending files to other physicians. It just makes tons of sense for that application.

yep, medical imaging, and never underestimate the depth of media/promotional pockets

how can you say it wont speed up your work flow when you havent used it?
- I haven't used, but none of the apps listed are very involved anyhow. I am just not seeing this product, with the listed apps, as much of an attraction to a consumer. Don't get me wrong. It's cool. I'd love to mess with it. I just think the price will be too high for the benefit to the average consumer.
if you have a device that you can just put on a table, and it just downloads everything for you to see
- I must admit, Microsoft has always been a master of easy simple UI. Lets just say I don't really trust this product in their hands. Somehow, they will screw it up.
also, in an example of sharing files to one another.. would be faster if you put two devices on a table and just simply drag to it?
- see comment above
the example they have shown is more to do with lifestyle. its coming closer to ubiquitous computing.
- I would be interested to see how this would be helpful in a general OS interface, or with professional programs. All I am saying is, for a consumer, I don't see a tremendous benefit to this product. Big deal, you can sort photos, draw and use a map. I just don't think this will be worth the price tag in the end.

You'd have to enjoy eating raw buffalo meat served on a bed of pebbles to not think that's cool.
