i feel as though im the only one who thinks most fwa sites are horrible. overproduced, heavy, bland, commercial blegh.
todays want2besquare is a perfect example. its just disgusting. look at it...its clunky, pixelated, its just a huge mess.
i hate how awards are given to sites that pack as much useless shit in as possible, regardless of quality.

i agree! and I'm actually glad someone feels the same as me on the FWA!
Yes, all the sites awarded on there will have been designed by hugely talented flash wizz kids... but that doesn't excuse from the fact that a lot of them are as qruise said "horrible, overproduced, heavy, bland, commercial blegh"
My feeling with web design is - just because it's done in flash, doesn't make it better!! If you're gonna use flash, it has to be done well, and I think a lot of desgners DON'T do it well... :/

So go make a site that doesn't suck in your opinion. Submit it and get your award right?
- HumanMale0
I kinda agree, but I couldn't implement anything anywhere near that standard.
Whether or not you 'like' the design of them, you must agree that most of them are technically fucking magic.

Part of the problem is that we as designers have all fallen prey to the community trends. The community trends are for all of us to have these whimsically minimal portfolio sites constructed of HTML and CSS. Why? Because that's actually a damn good solution for getting work and $$$ these days. The sad side of that is that no one really produces any mind blowing experimental portfolio work like they used to. That leaves the corporate sites with huge budgets as the main way that people win FWA awards. Can they all be boring and clunky yes. And I've done some of those boring clunky sites. It's a part of the deal. But I can guarantee that if any one of us got off our butts and produced a killer personal site, side project or experimental site it most definitely would get awarded on FWA. They have an eye for skill and talent there that has nothing to do with being corporate or not. They just go off of what gets submitted and if we as a community are submitting shit...well then they'll award the best of the shit.

hey, FWA is what it is.. yes, it has turned a bit commercial, but I think it's cool that they've found a way to make a little money off of it. I mean.. isn't that what we all want? A self-sufficiant residual paying product that gives us the freedom to do what we really want to do with our time??
Every time I need ideas for clients, not just visual.. but conceptual, being able to go to the FWA, sort specifially to my client's competitors, and see what everyone else is doing in that space is a super cool free service/tool to have. And for that, much props to those guys.
So, quit complaining and get off your ass and do something. :P he he

if anything, i'd view the FWA sites as examples of what NOT to do. seriously, want2besquare is teh perfect example of an absolutely crappy website, both visually and interactively.
there are some exceptions.. some personal portfolio pages are pretty nice, but its very very rare.

why the new user name by the way james?

skt, if you dont want to hear a real opinion on the overwhelming amount of shit there is, then keep plugging your ears up and covering your eyes with layers and layers of stock imagery and vector bursts.
or in this case, pixelated heaps of scanned animated flash junk that barely manages to interact on a cohesive level with the user's mouse clicks.

qruise-
2 ques. for you.
Are you a student?
and
How much weight do you place on awards?

Calm down.

I've emailed FWA about this in the past but it annoys me (every time I visit the site) how hard it is to see the NEXT/BACK button. Everyone I show thefwa to, who is not already familiar with it, doesn't find how to navigate through pages until I show them.
