Part of the problem is that we as designers have all fallen prey to the community trends. The community trends are for all of us to have these whimsically minimal portfolio sites constructed of HTML and CSS. Why? Because that's actually a damn good solution for getting work and $$$ these days. The sad side of that is that no one really produces any mind blowing experimental portfolio work like they used to. That leaves the corporate sites with huge budgets as the main way that people win FWA awards. Can they all be boring and clunky yes. And I've done some of those boring clunky sites. It's a part of the deal. But I can guarantee that if any one of us got off our butts and produced a killer personal site, side project or experimental site it most definitely would get awarded on FWA. They have an eye for skill and talent there that has nothing to do with being corporate or not. They just go off of what gets submitted and if we as a community are submitting shit...well then they'll award the best of the shit.
