im saying that children (of whatever race) born out of wedlock (age is a factor too) are less likely to graduate college and more likely to commit violent crimes.
mix that ^ with the pre-existing conditons you've stated, and we have a recipie for disaster..
i'm all for massive protests when some unarmed kid is gunned down by cops...
but mabye these people should be protesting our daily urban murder-fest with the same vigor?

ok. i'm with you 100% on that. the protest thing is usually so misdirected. i think i first realized that when the NAACP decided to boycott The Color Purple. i thought "have they nothing else to do?" recently Jessie called for a boycott of Seinfeld 'cause of Michael Richards. i emailed PUSH and asked "why not boycott the rappers and comics who use the word constantly?" they haven't gotten back to me.
i don't know what i would do if one of our present day "so-called leaders" planned a protest that actually made sense. i guess i would go.
i'm not campaigning for the single parent thing, it happens... way more than it should. "babies having babies" is the real problem there, i think. the kid is pretty much on his/her own.

i was in la when the levees broke. i was also in la 4 days before the weather broke and we all watched the impending doom on websites and traded links and hoped them all well.
if i had enough time to realized they were fucked, so did they. i have a hard time feeling sorry for someone once they burn their hand after i told them the stove was hot.

Jjust 'cause you knew about doesn't mean that they did, more than likely they did but it's not a given that they did.
When Juan hit Nova Scotia a few years ago I had no idea until an hour or 2 before it hit, and even then I didn't relize how bad it was going to be. There were four of us living in a town hosue and not one of us really had any idea what was happening, we just chalked it up to "just another storm". So chances are most people had the same thoughts about Katrina.

For 20+ years the NO Govt knew it would not withstand a CAT 4+ Hurricane and they did nothing about it but play the odds. Yet they cry foul and blame Bush for all this destruction. Hmm, you knew days in advance it was gonna hit, we gave you advance warning to get the fuck out, here are buses, sheltars etc..

and when things fail as they did in New Orleans should the governement wait almost a week to send in the cavalry with the bare necessities of food & bottled water & medicine

All I can say is Katrina uncovered more failings within all levels of government and society than any man made plan.
Ya, the NO levees are outdated and underfunded due to the local/state corruption or what have you. People knew that. FEMA stumbled the entire time, not saying that they didn't do good works, they did, but they weren't prepared for this. Communication between all levels of emergency personnel and law enforcement hit an all time low here. Not to mention communication between city, state, and national leaders, but that goes without saying.
I don't know if I can blame any one person. I know it's popular to bash George W., God knows I do for so many things, but this has been a slow build-up of negligence everywhere. And a natural disaster exposed it. Which I'm sure it will happen again some day.
As for the people that stayed behind, yeah, ideally everyone should have left, but it ain't that black and white. The old woman who wouldn't leave because that was all she had, the nursing home that couldn't be evacuated, the hospitals, the law enforcement, etc. I do feel sorry for the good people that had their reasons for staying and suffered for it.

Evidently, "accountability" is a word still not used in our government..........unless your running for office.
