Anyone see the first part of the Spike Lee Epic documentary "when the levee broke" that was about hurricaine Katrina hitting New Orleans.
jesus, some amazing footage and photography - VERY hard hitting stuff.
especially against bush. what an ignorant c*nt he is.
he said that he never knew there was a possible disaster about to happen, yet they showed him a few days before having a video conference phone call with an expert on teh matter and the expert was telling him to DO something about it!!! madness!!

Yup first part was on last night and concludes tonight at 9 on bbc4. I thought it was really good depiction of the events with some amazing interviews and footage. Def worth watching...

I saw that - didn't know it was Spike Lee though.
Personally I found the bit about conspiracy theories all a bit tiring and far too dramatic.
Plus - I fail to see why so many of the victims boiled it all down to the persecution of their race. Hurricanes are fairly indiscriminate.

I think it was perhaps the anger that a predominantly white government was sitting idly by as people were suffering and dying. But yeah i agree I don't believe it had anything to do with race, particularly liked the footage of Condoleeza Rice shoe shopping and going to broadway shows while New Orleans is in caos.
Yeah the conspiracy parts were a little tiresome but thought it was good on the whole not to much hate the white guy feel which makes a nice change for Spike Lee!

it's more the lack of action by government that left them feeling persecuted rather than the hurricane being racist. The lack of action by all levels of government was pretty shocking. If you add to that the fact that back in the 1930's during a hurricane properties in poor area's were sacrificed for the sake of the rich folks places... It's not hard to draw some conclusions.

Damn I missed that! I have a habit of falling asleep in front of the TV these days! Working too hard!

I liked it when the Canadian Mounties turned up before the US Army or anyone else did.
I wouldn't have expected anything else (or more) from the government. In all fairness though - they did make a point of telling people to get out. What more is there to do at the 11th hour?

I think I said at the time that westerners aren't particularly adept at dealing with these situations either. We're not used to disaster. To hear a woman saying how terrible it all was - how they had no ice for their drinks and little food and the government should fix that for her - well really.

------hehe aye there was also the woman who kept trying to dial 911 for help then ended up phoning the operator and tried to get her to plug-her-through. her life really WASNT in danger yet she expected to be put through. im sure there were a lot more people in a lot more despair than her.
looking forward to the 2nd installment tonight.

(Dec 19 06, 03:54)maybe fix it or tell them to get out sooner than the 11th hour if they knew about it for a while.

Anyone who can say with a straight face that the levees were blown up by the white man, to ruin the nearly all-black ninth ward is out of their mind.
That movie is filled with conspiracy theories against the 'white man' that add fuel to this racism bullshit he promotes.
Put any race into any ward in New Orleans and the same destruction would have happened regardless.
It's funny how Spike Lee conveniently left out the part in his movie where while on the way to the Dome the people stopped and raided/destroyed all the buildings along the way. Hotels for the first three floors were broken into and raided. Rooms were broken into and in every room the only things that were stolen was the booze from the mini bars. That's a fact. Then they smeared their shit on the walls and broke nearly everything in the rooms.
Inside the Dome while the hurricane approached early reports said it was a free for all beer bash.
Hell, look at the video when Oprah went in. Did you happen to notice the mounds of empty beer cases and empty bottles of beer and booze on the floor? She could hardly take a step without kicking a glass bottle.
They (and I say they for everyone in the Dome, not as a specific race) stole alcohol and didn't give a shit thinking this was going to be like every other hurricane. Then, after all hell broke loose 'oops, I guess we should have taken food and water.'
It's a joke and his 'movie' is going to do nothing more than add fuel to a fire that doesn't need to keep burning.

oh bugger i agree with kona.. kinda.
- mrdobolina0
every single person in the dome stole beer and deserved to die.
- moth0
especially the 'oops, I guess we should have taken food and water.' bit.
but i would still expect it's easier than it was to fly in choppers laden with water.....
Why didn't happen?
