the only thing that carson did that had any influence was to provide a working model of how to hype oneself and let the ego do the talking rather than the work.
and as for his 'typography', herbert spencer (for example) was doing it in the 50s/60s when david was just a twinkle in his fathers eye.

in any way, he must have been in the last decades reason for debates in almost evry design college!

His work was emulated a lot in the late 90's - not sure about his current work - but if its anything like the raygun magazines then I'd say its dated and time to move on.

David Carson is now the AD for Life on a Board. (lifeonaboard.com) We should be seeing his latest stuff in September at Surf Expo.

i can't believe what i am reading! for any designer to say david carson is not "hot" is absolutely insane! he set the stage for people to look at typography as image. yes his methods cannot be applied everywhere but they were completely needed and necessary in graphic design history. thats fine if you don't personally connect to his i hate to say "style" but to flat out say you don't like what he has done is crazy.
if you are on of those people please feel free to donate your books to me. because i love him and he was one of the first to inspire me as a designer. flake or not.
and yea thats bullshit if he is an asshole in real life, but for a living graphic designer to become that famous i think anyone would let it go to their head a little. he probably ends up going surfing instead of going to lectures.

I'm working with David now and from what I've experienced he's a really nice guy.

Seems like a silly conversation. People have 'blah blah blahed' for 5 pages. Seems that would mean he's done something right.

The Karim Rashid of graphic design.
That's not a good thing, but it's better than being nobody like most of us.
- he doesn't have cool glasses like Karim. Karim is a good speaker and did show up to the lecture I went to for what it's worth.myshoeshurt

I heard bad stuff about the guy. He did a lecture in my school 3 years ago. it was a good lecture, we went out for drinks after. I think he's a cool guy.
