re: skelly's post... IU booked him the year before i got there and he never showed up. they booked him a plane ticket and paid him for the lecture. he peaced with all the cash.

Any interview I've ever heard with him, he comes across as a bit of a prick. If a designer's work is good, but they are a bad person, that has a reflection on their work in my eyes, so I don't really like his work either.

I think the past decade or so of having his ego massaged has either got to him or he just started out being a self-enclosed arse. He speaks about being "self-indulgent" in his work, and he certainly brings (brought) very new ideas and ways of seeing to the table, but above all the things he says and his perspective on his OWN work, regardless of what other people think of it, just seems so so arrogant and proud to the point of bringing it all down. Like a kid in art class who thinks he is the best, his parents tell him he is the best, and when he speaks to other kids in the class, he speaks down to them or from upon high, because he "knows" he is better than them.
That is bullshit.
Very interesting work, not much to say for himself.

defintitely hot.
dude was a pioneer, allbeit, a dick, maybe....
...but so was Helmut Krone.

Well if someone asked you to talk about your work for a documentary, your going to sell it the best you can.
Jealousy is a bitch.

he was a pioneer... now there's a new generation...
... he has my respect for the path he cleared for all of us though.

// He ripped off the Dadaist graphic movement just without the message...

"End of Print" & his work was the reason i started to do design as well. I don't so much love his work now as i used to but i think Carson was king for a time and that time has passed. I respect what he has brought to the table and i would hope the graphic world would too.

You have to admit he advanced typography to a level that hasnt been reached since.
But I agree the new generation has taken over.
- smrz0
who is this "new generation" being referred to, and what have they done lately???
- kingjulien0
i'm kind of partial to Jon Rohrer, but End of Print still sits on my desk.

(Oct 24 06, 09:49)exactly, so i wouldn't want to ruin it by acting in a way everyone would think i'm too full of myself.
i dig his work. like others here said, end of print pretty much opened my eyes to what graphic design was/could be when i was young.
kinda shitty he skips out on conferences though.

smrz... anyone who's a part of the 'new media' phase such as 'the web' etc is someone I'd define as 'new generation'...
... and I don't mean they have to be working in New Media... but are Fresh in the design field in this New Media 'age'...
... if that makes any sense...

What is it that makes a complete stranger dive into an icy river to save a solid gold baby? Maybe we'll never know...

I believe that since Carson there was a "designers republic"-type influence followed by a shift to a "bright/cutesy" influence that I think might have started in Japan....
and you cant forget the grafitti influence that is finally slowing down... which included the much seen "paint-drip"...
I hated these trends, but they were there very obviously.

I remember reading an article about how he got his start. One day he was doing desktop publishing in a program called Pagemaker, he didn't know the program very well and when he imported text into a text box all the text smashed together. Instead of fixing the type it he just left if jumbled together.
That's it.
