Any interview I've ever heard with him, he comes across as a bit of a prick. If a designer's work is good, but they are a bad person, that has a reflection on their work in my eyes, so I don't really like his work either.

I dig it, but I think I agree with killerqueen here...

some of this stuff is nice, but it's an egofest I prefer to avoid.

just checked his site and his stuff looks the same as it did 10 years ago.

I think the past decade or so of having his ego massaged has either got to him or he just started out being a self-enclosed arse. He speaks about being "self-indulgent" in his work, and he certainly brings (brought) very new ideas and ways of seeing to the table, but above all the things he says and his perspective on his OWN work, regardless of what other people think of it, just seems so so arrogant and proud to the point of bringing it all down. Like a kid in art class who thinks he is the best, his parents tell him he is the best, and when he speaks to other kids in the class, he speaks down to them or from upon high, because he "knows" he is better than them.
That is bullshit.
Very interesting work, not much to say for himself.

that's like saying picasso was a guy who used paint.

When I was in design school Carson was the major influence. Every student wanted to copy his style, and one of my professors was even bitter because he thought he had come up with a lot of the original ideas which Carson cashed in on (he was part of the Cal Arts scene).
Ten years later, his work is out of style and looks horrible to our eyes. Simplicity and clarity rule the day. Not surprising really but it shows you how cyclical the whole thing is.

there was a great thread on DC a while back here. boy did it go on.
after he didnt turn up once to a seminar in AUS, Ken Cato put his personal email up on the screen so everyone could email him and tell him he sucked.

Carson was an artist that used design elements.

A story an instructor at college told us (I'm paraphrasing): Way back when, David Carson was becoming a better-known designer, but sapped creatively, so to get new ideas he asked a big name design school to send him student portfolios under the pretense that he would choose one as an assistant. He ended up keeping the portfolios, copying the deconstructed design style of the students and becoming as famous for design as he wished he was for surfing.
My opinion: its ok, and at the time it must have been a breath of fresh air, but I had the feeling he was a dick, and after hearing that story I really can't look at his work without the vague feeling that he's a hack.

Well if someone asked you to talk about your work for a documentary, your going to sell it the best you can.
Jealousy is a bitch.

I heard bad stuff about the guy. He did a lecture in my school 3 years ago. it was a good lecture, we went out for drinks after. I think he's a cool guy.

he was a pioneer... now there's a new generation...
... he has my respect for the path he cleared for all of us though.
